Aim: To compare test results obtained from a PCR assay for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) five loci criteria for detecting microsatellite instability (MSI) with those obtained from immunohistochemistry of mismatch repair and a five-mononucleotide site amplification system in East Asian patients with colorectal cancer.
Patients & Methods: A total of 245 East Asian patients with colorectal cancer were studied retrospectively at our institution.
Results: The consistency of the NCI panel PCR method compared with detection of mismatch repair protein expression by immunohistochemistry was 0.898. High level MSI (MSI-H) status was correlated with the Tumor, Node, Metastasis stage, tumor location site, metastasis, tumor grade, mucinous histological type and BRAF-type mutations.
Conclusion: The NCI panel PCR assay has excellent sensitivity and specificity for detecting MSI in an East Asian population.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has become one of the most prevalent chronic liver diseases worldwide. The serum uric acid-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) has been recognized as a novel marker for metabolic diseases, including MASLD. However, all previous studies were performed in adults.

Haemoglobin (Hb) AE Bart's disease is a rare form of thalassemia that results from the co-inheritance of Hb E and alpha thalassemia, typically with Hb H disease. The clinical severity can vary depending on the underlying genetic mutations, particularly in the presence of Hb Constant Spring (Hb CS), which is a highly unstable form of alpha thalassemia. Understanding the genetic basis and haematological profiles of Hb AE Bart's disease is crucial for proper diagnosis and management.

During disease surveys in 2021 and 2022, outbreaks of leaf spot were observed in East Asian hogweed () plants in fields located in Pyeongchang and Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, Korea. The disease incidence in the fields ranged from 2% to 50%. Based on the morphological and cultural characteristics, four single-conidium fungal isolates from the leaf spot symptoms were identified as sp.
