The Smoluchowski theory has been widely accepted as the basic theory to estimate the rapid coagulation rate of colloidal particles in electrolyte solutions. However, because the size and specificity of molecules and ions are not taken into account, the theory is applicable only if the particle size is large enough to neglect the effects caused by the structured layers composed of water molecules, ions, and hydrated ions adsorbed on the colloidal surface. In the present study, the rapid coagulation rates of silica nanoparticles in concentrated chloride and potassium solutions were measured by using a low-angle light-scattering apparatus, and the dependence of the experimental value of rapid coagulation rate, K, on the particle diameter, D, and also on the Gibbs free energy of hydration of ions, ΔG, was investigated extensively. The following were found. (1) When the particle size was small enough, the value of K reduced exponentially not only with the decreasing particle size but also with the increasing value of (-ΔG) of cations (counterions) in the case of chloride solutions and with that of anions (coions) in the case of potassium solutions. (2) Silica nanoparticles of D ≲ 70 nm in 1 M KNO and KSCN solutions did not coagulate at all, although they coagulated at D ≳ 100 nm as in the other potassium solutions. These unexpected phenomena were explained by the proposed mechanisms.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) occur widely in drinking water, and consumption of contaminated drinking water is an important human exposure route. Granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption can effectively remove PFAS from water. To support the design of GAC treatment systems, a rapid bench-scale testing procedure and scale-up approach are needed to assess the effects of GAC type, background water matrix, and empty bed contact time (EBCT) on GAC use rates.

The development of self-elastic sponges with enhanced hemostatic and antibacterial properties to treat noncompressible hemorrhage and facilitate wound healing remains challenging. Herein, we prepared a chitosan sponge reinforced with lauric acid-modified quaternized chitosan (LQC) and attapulgite, features a porous structure, high self-elasticity, and rapid shape recovery. The incorporation of LQC conferred the sponge with an enhanced capacity to promote the adhesion, aggregation, and activation of blood cells, and resistance to infection by Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; the incorporation of attapulgite enhanced the hydrophilicity and mechanical strength of the sponge, and its ability to activate the intrinsic and extrinsic coagulation pathways.

Uncontrolled release of active agents in active packaging reduces antimicrobial efficacy, hindering the effective protection of perishable products from microbial infection. Herein, a novel defective engineering was proposed to design defective and hollow ZIF-8 structures grown on TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNFs) and use them as fast-reacting nanocarriers for loading and controlled release curcumin (Cur) in sodium alginate (SA) active packaging systems (CZT-Cur-SA). By employing stable chelation between tannic acid (TA) and ZIF-8 zinc ions, the connections between zinc ions and imidazole ligands were severed to form a loose and hollow structure, which facilitates the rapid reaction and release of active ingredients triggered by pH changes in the microenvironment.

Severe traumatic bleeding and chronic diabetic wounds require rapid hemostasis and multifunctional dressings, which remain particularly challenging, especially for non-compressible trauma and irregular wounds with dysregulated microenvironments. Chitosan (CS) can be easily cross-linked with genipin to form GpCS hydrogels. However, developing injectable GpCS hydrogels for biomedical applications faces challenges, particularly in enhancing rapid gel formation and optimizing physical properties.

Despite the unique properties of clay nanocomposites for cardiovascular applications, there are few data on the hemocompatibility of these nanomaterials. This study represents the first comprehensive investigation of the hemo/biocompatibility of clay nanocomposites . Nanocomposite coatings of polylactic acid (PLA)-polyethylene glycol (3 wt %)-Cloisite20A nanoclay (3 wt %) were produced using electrospraying technique as potential drug-eluting stent (DES) coatings.
