Amphiphilic additives such as bovine serum albumin (BSA) and Tween have been used to improve cellulose hydrolysis by cellulases. However, there has been a lack of clarity to explain their mechanism of action in enzymatic hydrolysis of pure or low-lignin cellulosic substrates. In this work, a commercial Trichoderma reesei enzyme preparation and the amphiphilic additives BSA and Tween 20 were applied for hydrolysis of pure Avicel cellulose. The results showed that these additives only had large effects on cellulose conversion at low enzyme to substrate ratios when the reaction flasks were shaken. Furthermore, changes in the air-liquid interfacial area profoundly affected cellulose conversion, but surfactants reduced or prevented cellulase deactivation at the air-liquid interface. Not shaking the flasks or adding low amounts of surfactant resulted in near theoretical cellulose conversion at low enzyme loadings given enough reaction time. At low enzyme loadings, hydrolysis of cellulose in lignocellulosic biomass with low lignin content suffered from enhanced enzyme deactivation at the air-liquid interface.

Lithium metal, renowned for its ultra-high theoretical specific capacity and low electrochemical potential, is a promising anode material for high-energy-density batteries. However, its commercialization is impeded by issues such as uncontrolled Li dendrite growth and volumetric expansion during cycling. Herein, we report the synthesis of a nitrogen- and SiN-enriched porous based biochar derived from antibiotic mycelial residues rich in soybean cellulose, which serves as a three-dimensional skeleton for Li metal anodes.

Simultaneous CO/NO removal from flue gas is extensively attracted to meet the goal of atmospheric pollutant and carbon mitigations. An optimized CaO-CO system via the design of the bio-modified calcium-based pellet is proposed in which the pyrolysis of biomass ensures efficient CO/NO removal. Since the type of biomass shows great influence on the characteristics of pyrolysis products which may influence the behavior of reaction, the correlations of characteristics of biomass structural components, modified Ca-sorbent, and CO/NO removal reactivity were established with the support of experimental results and Density functional theory (DFT) calculation.

There are abundant glycosylated substances such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and phytochemical glycosides in plants, which could be converted into functional chemicals such as monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and bioactive aglycones by cleavage of glycosidic bonds using glycoside hydrolases (GHs). Among those GHs, β-glucosidase and β-xylosidase are the rate-limiting enzymes for degrading cellulose and hemicellulose, respectively, and can convert a variety of glycosylated substances. These two enzymes play important roles in the high value use of plant resources and have great potential applications.

Improving lignocellulose degradation and organic matter conversion in agricultural and livestock wastes remains a great challenge. Here, the contribution of humic acid (HA) to lignocellulose degradation was investigated, focusing on the abundance of key microbial species and carbohydrate-active enzymes during aerobic composting. The results demonstrated that the addition of HA not only increased the complexity of the microbial network, but also enhanced the positive interaction between microorganism.

The conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy by triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) has attracted attention in recent years, particularly in the field of wearable sensor. In this work, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNF) with carboxylate groups were compounded with MXene to serve as both the negative friction layer and the electrode in assembling a TENG with nylon. The synergistic effect between TOCNF and MXene was analyzed to disclose its influence on the performance of the as-prepared TENG.
