Protontherapy is hadrontherapy's fastest-growing modality and a pillar in the battle against cancer. Hadrontherapy's superiority lies in its inverted depth-dose profile, hence tumour-confined irradiation. Protons, however, lack distinct radiobiological advantages over photons or electrons. Higher LET (Linear Energy Transfer) C-ions can overcome cancer radioresistance: DNA lesion complexity increases with LET, resulting in efficient cell killing, i.e. higher Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE). However, economic and radiobiological issues hamper C-ion clinical amenability. Thus, enhancing proton RBE is desirable. To this end, we exploited the p + B → 3α reaction to generate high-LET alpha particles with a clinical proton beam. To maximize the reaction rate, we used sodium borocaptate (BSH) with natural boron content. Boron-Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) uses B-enriched BSH for neutron irradiation-triggered alpha particles. We recorded significantly increased cellular lethality and chromosome aberration complexity. A strategy combining protontherapy's ballistic precision with the higher RBE promised by BNCT and C-ion therapy is thus demonstrated.

Background/objectives: Bone marrow (BM) adipocytes are critical in progressing solid tumor metastases and hematological malignancies across pediatric to aging populations. Single-point biopsies remain the gold standard for monitoring BM diseases, including hematologic malignancies, but are limited in capturing the full complexity of loco-regional and global BM microenvironments. Non-invasive imaging techniques like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), could offer valuable alternatives for real-time evaluation of BM diseases in both preclinical translational and clinical studies.

Wide field retinal imaging has emerged as a transformative technology over the last few decades, revolutionizing our ability to visualize the intricate landscape of the retina. By capturing expansive retinal areas, these techniques offer a panoramic view going beyond traditional imaging methods. In this review, we explore the significance of retinal imaging-based biomarkers to help diagnose ocular and systemic conditions.

Gas bubbles, commonly used in medical ultrasound (US), witness advancements with nanobubbles (NB), providing improved capabilities over microbubbles (MB). NBs offer enhanced penetration into capillaries and the ability to extravasate into tumors following systemic injection, alongside prolonged circulation and persistent acoustic contrast. Low-frequency insonation (<1 MHz) with NBs holds great potential in inducing significant bioeffects, making the monitoring of their acoustic response critical to achieving therapeutic goals.

Speech-on-speech masking is a common and challenging situation in everyday verbal communication. The ability to segregate competing auditory streams is a necessary requirement for focusing attention on the target speech. The Visual World Paradigm (VWP) provides insight into speech processing by capturing gaze fixations on visually presented icons that reflect the speech signal.

Introduction: The Lung Clearance Index (LCI) is an established research test, but its role in clinical decision-making is not well defined. This study estimated the proportion of treatment decisions that are changed or supported by the added information provided by LCI.

Methods: A mixed methods prospective observational study was conducted in North America.
