Article Abstract

The steadily increasing size of scientific Monte Carlo simulations and the desire for robust, correct, and reproducible results necessitates rigorous testing procedures for scientific simulations in order to detect numerical problems and programming bugs. However, the testing paradigms developed for deterministic algorithms have proven to be ill suited for stochastic algorithms. In this paper we demonstrate explicitly how the technique of statistical hypothesis testing, which is in wide use in other fields of science, can be used to devise automatic and reliable tests for Monte Carlo methods, and we show that these tests are able to detect some of the common problems encountered in stochastic scientific simulations. We argue that hypothesis testing should become part of the standard testing toolkit for scientific simulations.

Background And Hypothesis: Gut dysbiosis characterized by an imbalance in pathobionts (Enterobacter, Escherichia and Salmonella) and symbionts (Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus and Prevotella) can occur during chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. We evaluated the associations between representative symbionts (Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus) and pathobionts (Enterobacteriaceae) with kidney function in persons with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD).

How are arbitrary sequences of verbal information retained and manipulated in working memory? Increasing evidence suggests that serial order in verbal WM is spatially coded and that spatial attention is involved in access and retrieval. Based on the idea that brain areas controlling spatial attention are also involved in oculomotor control, we used eye tracking to reveal how the spatial structure of serial order information is accessed in verbal working memory.
