We present an experimental study of pattern formation during the penetration of an aqueous surfactant solution into a liquid fatty acid in a Hele-Shaw cell. When a solution of the cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride is injected into oleic acid, a wide variety of fingering patterns are observed as a function of surfactant concentration and flow rate, which are strikingly different than the classic Saffman-Taylor (ST) instability. We observe evidence of interfacial material forming between the two liquids, causing these instabilities. Moreover, the number of fingers decreases with increasing flow rate Q, while the average finger width increases with Q, both trends opposite to the ST case. Bulk rheology on related mixtures indicates a gel-like state. Comparison of experiments using other oils indicates the importance of pH and the carboxylic head group in the formation of the surfactant-fatty acid material.

This paper reports the proportion-dependent toxicity of binary surfactant mixtures containing anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonionic fatty alcohol-polyoxyethlene ether (AEO) toward Photobacterium phosphoreum. The crucial role of toxicity interactions was elucidated by spectroscopic probing the refolding of the unfolded bovine serum albumin (BSA) induced by SDS and theoretical calculating the interaction parameter of mixed surfactants based on Rubingh's model from the critical micelle concentrations. The SDS/AEO mixtures can be divided into two groups based on the toxicity response to the proportion of AEO in the mixtures: Group I contained low mass proportions of AEO, that is, SDS:AEO = 4:1, 3:1; Group II featured high AEO proportions, that is, SDS:AEO = 3:2, 1:1, 2:3, 1:4.

Flurbiprofen was formulated as a proniosomal transdermal gel with high drug loading (55.4%, w/w), using a series of nonionic surfactant and cholesterol. A two-factor, three-level randomized full factorial strategy was developed to optimize simultaneously the effect of surfactant fatty acid side chain length and the amount of cholesterol on the properties of the proniosomes, namely drug permeation characteristics such as steady-state transdermal flux (SSTF), permeability coefficient (PC), and drug entrapment efficiency.

There is a growing need for in-depth research into new skin- and environment-friendly surfactants, such as alkylpolyglucosides. The aim of this study was to assess whether, to which extent and by what mechanism the two commonly used hydrophilic excipients, propylene glycol (PG) and glycerol (GL), affect the colloidal structure of emulsions formed by a natural mixed emulsifier, cetearyl glucoside and cetearyl alcohol. Furthermore, the study was concerned with the effect of these changes on in vitro permeation profiles of two model drugs (diclofenac sodium and caffeine) and in vivo skin performance of the test samples.
