Published: October 2017

Properties of helium atoms in the solid phase are investigated using the multiweight diffusion Monte Carlo method. Two different importance function transformations are used in two series of independent calculations. The kinetic energy is estimated for both the solid and liquid phases of ^{4}He. We estimate the melting and freezing densities, among other properties of interest. Our estimates are compared with experimental values. We discuss why walkers biased by two distinctly different guiding functions do not lead to noticeable changes in the reported results. Criticisms concerning the bias introduced into our estimates by population control and system size effects are considered.

Significance: In the last years, time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy (TD-NIRS) has gained increasing interest as a tool for studying tissue spectroscopy with commercial devices. Although it provides much more information than its continuous wave counterpart, accurate models interpreting the measured raw data in real time are still lacking.

Aim: We introduce an analytical model that can be integrated and used in TD-NIRS data processing software and toolkits in real time.

BTSegDiff: Brain tumor segmentation based on multimodal MRI Dynamically guided diffusion probability model.

Comput Biol Med

January 2025

School of Information Science and Engineering, Yunnan University, 650500, Kunming, China. Electronic address:

In the treatment of brain tumors, accurate diagnosis and treatment heavily rely on reliable brain tumor segmentation, where multimodal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays a pivotal role by providing valuable complementary information. This integration significantly enhances the performance of brain tumor segmentation. However, due to the uneven grayscale distribution, irregular shapes, and significant size variations in brain tumor images, this task remains highly challenging.

This paper investigates the impact of varying humidity conditions on the carbonation depth in hardened cement paste using a 3-dimensional microscale kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) approach. The kMC algorithm effectively simulates the carbonation process by capturing the interplay between CO diffusion and relative humidity at the microscale, providing insights into macro trends that align with historical models. The study reveals that the maximum carbonation depth is achieved at relative humidity levels between 55 and 65%, where the balance between water and CO diffusion is optimized.

Towards stormwater reuse risk management plans: Methodology and catchment scale evaluation of QMRA.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Department of Science and Engineering of Materials, Environment and Urban Planning - SIMAU, Polytechnic University of Marche, via Brecce Bianche 12, 60131 Ancona, Italy.

The reuse of stormwater represents a potential option for meeting water demands in water stressed regions as well as preventing and mitigating diffuse pollution of receiving water bodies. Particularly, the elaboration of a risk management plan for stormwater reuse may help to understand associated environmental and public health risks and design fit-for-purpose water treatment processes. In this work, it is presented an innovative methodology to perform quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) for stormwater reuse by using data simulated by SWMM software.

Precursor sticking coefficient determination from indented deposits fabricated by electron beam induced deposition.

Physics Institute, Goethe University Frankfurt, Max-von-Laue-Str. 1, 60438 Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

A fast simulation approach for focused electron beam induced deposition (FEBID) numerically solves the diffusion-reaction equation (continuum model) of the precursor surface on the growing nanostructure in conjunction with a Monte Carlo simulation for electron transport in the growing deposit. An important requirement in this regard is to have access to a methodology that can be used to systematically determine the values for the set of precursor parameters needed for this model. In this work we introduce such a method to derive the precursor sticking coefficient as one member of the precursor parameter set.
