The exploration of phase formation in the f-element-bearing iodate selenate system has resulted in 14 novel rare-earth-containing iodate selenates, Ln(IO)(SeO) (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd; LnISeO-1), Ln(IO)(SeO)(HO) (Ln = Sm, Eu; LnISeO-2), and Ln(IO)(SeO)(HO)·HO (Ln = Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, Y; LnISeO-3), as well as two new thorium iodate selenates, Th(OH)(IO)(SeO)(HO) (ThISeO-1) and Th(IO)(SeO) (ThISeO-2). LnISeO-3 and ThISeO-2 crystallize in the chiral space group P222, while LnISeO-1, LnISeO-2, and ThISeO-1 crystallize in the centrosymmetric space group P2/c. The numbers of both coordinating and hydrating water molecules crystallized in LnISeO-1, LnISeO-2, and LnISeO-3 increase along these three series, in line with the increasingly negative values of hydration enthalpies of heavier trivalent lanthanide ions. Such a systematic change in compositions, especially the first coordination sphere of Ln, further induces structural rearrangements, including coordination number and dimensional reductions. More specifically, the structures of LnISeO-1, LnISeO-2, and LnISeO-3 have undergone transitions from 2D Ln-oxo layers with 10-coordinate Ln centers to 1D Ln-oxo chains with 9-coordinate Ln centers and then to 0D Ln-oxo monomers with 8-coordinate Ln centers, respectively. The formation and characterization of this large family of Ln/Th iodate selenates suggest that such a mixed-anion system not only exhibits richer structural chemistry but also can be capable of generating intriguing properties, such as the second-harmonic generation (SHG) effect.

The low dietary intake of iodine (I) and selenium (Se) by humans leads to serious health and socioeconomic problems. Therefore, enrichment of plants with I and Se using fertilisers containing these micronutrients is commonly recommended. In this study, we examined the impacts of combined spraying of I as iodide or iodate, Se as selenite or selenate, and calcium (Ca) as Ca-chloride on the enrichment of 'Red Jonaprince' (Malus domestica Borth.

Coprecipitation of radionuclides with barite has been studied to remove radionuclides from radioactive liquid waste because of its excellent removal efficiency; however, little information exists concerning the stability of the ions coprecipitated with barite. This study systematically investigated the stability of iodate, selenite, and selenate coprecipitated with barite via leaching tests. These oxyanions were gradually leached from the oxyanion-bearing barite into ultrapure water over time.

Multiple geochemical factors may cause iodine and selenium deficiency in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

Deficiencies of the micronutrients iodine and selenium are particularly prevalent where populations consume local agricultural produce grown on soils with low iodine and selenium availability. This study focussed on such an area, Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan, through a geochemical survey of iodine and selenium fractionation and speciation in irrigation water and arable soil. Iodine and selenium concentrations in water ranged from 0.

Many people across the world suffer from iodine (I) deficiency and related diseases. The I content in plant-based foods is particularly low, but can be enhanced by agronomic biofortification. Therefore, in this study two field experiments were conducted under orchard conditions to assess the potential of I biofortification of apples and pears by foliar fertilization.

A method for the simultaneous determination of arsenobetaine, arsenite, arsenate, dimethylarsinic acid, monomethylarsonic acid, selenite, selenate, bromate, bromide, iodate, and iodide in bottled drinking water and fruit juice samples was established by using high-performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The separation of eleven compounds was performed on an ion exchange chromatography column (Dionex IonPac AS14) with 20 mmol L (NH)CO (pH 10) and 50 mmol L (NH)CO (pH 10) as a mobile phase. The limits of quantification of the method were 0.
