Rapid reaction of NaBH with MeOH precludes its use as a solvent for large-scale ester reductions. We have now learned that a catalytic amount of NaOMe (5 mol %) stabilizes NaBH solutions in methanol at 25 °C and permits the use of these solutions for the reduction of esters to alcohols. The generality of this reduction method was demonstrated using 22 esters including esters of naturally occurring chiral γ-butyrolactone containing dicarboxylic acids. This method permits the chemoselective reductions of esters in the presence of cyano and nitro groups and the reductive cyclization of a pyrrolidinedione ester to a fused five-membered furo[2,3-b]pyrrole and a (-)-crispine A analogue in high optical and chemical yields. Lactones, aliphatic esters, aromatic esters containing electron-withdrawing groups, and heteroaryl esters are reduced more rapidly than aryl esters containing electron-donating groups. The B NMR spectrum of the NaOMe-stabilized NaBH solutions showed a minor quartet due to monomethoxyborohydride (NaBHOMe) that persisted up to 18 h at 25 °C. We postulate that NaBHOMe is probably the active reducing agent. In support of this hypothesis, the activation barrier for hydride transfer from BH(OMe) onto benzoic acid methyl ester was calculated as 18.3 kcal/mol.

Within the context of the circular economy, the transformation of agri-food waste or by-products into valuable products is essential to promoting a transition towards more sustainable and efficient utilisation of resources. Whey is a very abundant by-product of dairy manufacturing. Apart from partial reutilisation in animal feed or some food supplements, the sustainable management and disposal of whey still represent significant environmental challenges.

In order to enhance the aging resistance, high temperature stability and low temperature crack resistance of asphalt pavement materials, 0.06% oxidized graphene (GO) and 12% polyurethane (PU) were used as composite modifiers to modify the base asphalt. The RTFOT test was conducted to evaluate the anti-aging performance of the modified asphalt.

Background: Pottery lipid residue analysis has been extensively practiced worldwide as an important part of archaeometry studies, but in some cases, the complexity of archaeological residue cannot be fully revealed by one-dimensional gas chromatography (1D GC) separation. Although the development of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) has offered another way to achieve better separation and higher resolution, GCxGC separation has rarely been applied to pottery residue analysis. Clearly, GCxGC separation needs to be explored to examine and scrutinize the complexity of pottery lipid residue profile as well as rapid data treatment workflow.

Background: The separation performance of drift tube ion mobility spectrometers is usually relatively weak with resolving powers well below 100. Improving this aspect requires, besides the optimization of other parameters, the challenging increase of the drift voltage as deduced from fundamental equations describing the broadening of a drifting ion swarm. We recently succeeded in constructing an improved high voltage instrument equipped with an electrospray source capable of analysing liquid samples with resolving powers above 200.

In situ vaccine (ISV) can activate the anti-tumor immune system by inducing immunogenic cell death (ICD) at the tumor site. However, the development of tumor ISV still faces challenges due to insufficient tumor antigens released by tumor cells and the existence of tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment (TIME). Targeting the STING pathway has been reported to enhance the adjuvant effects of in situ tumor vaccines by initiating innate immunity.
