Real time spectroscopic ellipsometry (RTSE) has been applied for in-situ monitoring of the first stage of copper indium-gallium diselenide (CIGS) thin film deposition by the three-stage co-evaporation process used for fabrication of high efficiency thin film photovoltaic (PV) devices. The first stage entails the growth of indium-gallium selenide (InGa)₂Se₃ (IGS) on a substrate of Mo-coated soda lime glass maintained at a temperature of 400 °C. This is a critical stage of CIGS deposition because a large fraction of the final film thickness is deposited, and as a result precise compositional control is desired in order to achieve the optimum performance of the resulting CIGS solar cell. RTSE is sensitive to monolayer level film growth processes and can provide accurate measurements of bulk and surface roughness layer thicknesses. These in turn enable accurate measurements of the bulk layer optical response in the form of the complex dielectric function ε = ε₁ - iε₂, spectra. Here, RTSE has been used to obtain the (ε₁, ε₂) spectra at the measurement temperature of 400 °C for IGS thin films of different Ga contents () deduced from different ranges of accumulated bulk layer thickness during the deposition process. Applying an analytical expression in common for each of the (ε₁, ε₂) spectra of these IGS films, oscillator parameters have been obtained in the best fits and these parameters in turn have been fitted with polynomials in . From the resulting database of polynomial coefficients, the (ε₁, ε₂) spectra can be generated for any composition of IGS from the single parameter, . The results have served as an RTSE fingerprint for IGS composition and have provided further structural information beyond simply thicknesses, for example information related to film density and grain size. The deduced IGS structural evolution and the (ε₁, ε₂) spectra have been interpreted as well in relation to observations from scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy profiling analyses. Overall the structural, optical and compositional analysis possible by RTSE has assisted in understanding the growth and properties of three stage CIGS absorbers for solar cells and shows future promise for enhancing cell performance through monitoring and control.

The mycotoxin tenuazonic acid (TeA) inhibits photosynthesis and is expected to be developed as a bioherbicide to control Ageratina adenophora that is one of the most serious invasive alien plants in China. New leaves sprouting from A. adenophora at low temperatures (LT) in early spring are less sensitive to TeA compared to those growing in summer.

SRCAP is involved in porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus activated Notch signaling pathway.

Article Synopsis
  • Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) caused by PRRSV leads to significant economic losses in the pork industry, and the non-structural protein 4 (Nsp4) plays a crucial role in the virus's infection process.
  • Using label-free quantitative proteomics, researchers identified SRCAP as a key interacting protein that enhances PRRSV infection by activating non-canonical Notch signaling through specific interaction sites on both proteins.
  • Blocking the Notch signaling pathway presents a promising strategy for developing new antiviral therapies against PRRSV infection.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the causal relationships between coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial infarction (MI), urate levels, and various types of aortic aneurysms (AA, AAA, TAA) and aortic dissection (AD) in people of European ancestry.
  • Utilizing a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, researchers analyzed genetic data to determine how CAD and MI might influence the risks of developing AA and AAA.
  • The results indicate a significant increased risk of AA and AAA associated with CAD/MI, while no causal relationship was found between CAD, MI, and TAA.

Association of alpha globin gene copy number with exhaled nitric oxide in a cross-sectional study of healthy Black adults.

BMJ Open Respir Res

Introduction: The genetic determinants of fractional exhalation of nitric oxide (FeNO), a marker of lung inflammation, are understudied in Black individuals. Alpha globin () restricts nitric oxide signalling in arterial endothelial cells via interactions with nitric oxide synthase; however, its role in regulating the release of NO from respiratory epithelium is less well understood. We hypothesised that an gene deletion, common among Black individuals, would be associated with higher FeNO.

Identifying the progress of kidney injury may aid the effective treatment and intervention. Herein, we developed a fluorescent biosensor array for instantaneous and accurate identification of the kidney injury progression via "doubled" signals. The multichannel biosensor array consisted of polydopamine-polyethyleneimine (PDA-PEI) and multicolor-labelled different length of DNAs including AAAAA-Cyanine7 (5A-Cy7), AAAAAAAAAA-Texas Red (10A-Texas Red), and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-VIC (20A-VIC).
