Copper ferrite, belonging to the wide and technologically relevant class of spinel ferrites, was grown in the form of t-CuFeO nanocrystals within a porous matrix of silica in the form of either an aerogel or a xerogel, and compared to a bulk sample. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy revealed the presence of two different sub-lattices within the crystal structure of t-CuFeO, one tetragonal and one cubic, defined by the Cu and Fe ions respectively. Our investigation provides evidence that the Jahn-Teller distortion, which occurs on the Cu ions located in octahedral sites, does not affect the coordination geometry of the Fe ions, regardless of their location in octahedral or tetrahedral sites.
This article studies the synthesis, as well as the structural, vibrational, and optical properties of Eu-doped ZnO quantum dots (QDs) and investigates the energy transfer mechanism from the ZnO host to Eu ions using Reisfeld's approximation. Eu-doped ZnO QDs at varying concentrations (0-7%) were successfully prepared using a wet chemical method. The successful doping of Eu ions into the ZnO host lattice, as well as the composition and valence states of the elements present in the sample, were confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses.

Evidence of chirality was observed at the Fe metal center in Fe(III) spin crossover coordination salts [Fe(qsal)Ni(dmit)] and [Fe(qsal)(TCNQ)] from X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Fe 2pcore threshold. Based on the circularly polarized X-ray absorption data, the X-ray natural circular dichroism seen [Fe(qsal)Ni(dmit)] and [Fe(qsal)(TCNQ)] is far stronger than seen for [Fe(qsal)Cl] suggesting this natural circular dichroism signature is a ligand effect rather than a result of just a loss of octahedral symmetry on the Fe core. The larger the chiral effects in the Fe 2p core to bound X-ray absorption, the greater the perturbation of the Fe 2pto 2pspin-orbit splitting seen in the X-ray absorption spectra.
This study investigated the speciation and aqueous dissolution of macronutrients in fire ash from diverse ecosystems and speciation of ash and smoke from laboratory burning, exploring the variations and their causes. The speciation of phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), and potassium (K) in fire ash from five globally distributed ecosystems was characterized by using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and sequential fractionation. Aqueous dissolution of the macronutrients was measured by batch experiments at acidic and alkaline pHs.
