Topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAI), used for treatment of glaucoma, are generally regarded as safe and unconnected with systemic side effects. We report an unusual case of fatigue, metabolic acidosis, and normocytic anaemia associated with ocular administration of the CAI, dorzolamide, in a patient with impaired renal function. In chronic kidney disease, where CAI elimination may be decreased, and patients prone to develop metabolic acidosis, systemic absorption of ocular administered CAI could lead to rare, but potentially serious adverse reaction, that are a consequence of inhibition of extraocular carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes.

In contrast, by underestimating the role of ions, many misconceptions have prevailed. The author points out that maintaining the constancy of carbon dioxide is especially important.

The activation of acid-sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a) in response to extracellular acidification leads to an increase in extracellular calcium influx, thereby exacerbating the degeneration of articular chondrocytes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It has been suggested that the inhibition of extracellular calcium influx could potentially impede chondrocyte ferroptosis. The cystine transporter, solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11), is recognized as a key regulator of ferroptosis.

Background: Considering the importance of using Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) in COVID-19-related hypoxemia, the present study was conducted to determine the effective factors on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) failure rate in COVID-19-related hypoxemia.
Materials And Methods: This research was a retrospective cross-sectional study (2021) investigating the records of 200 adult patients with the medical diagnosis of acute respiratory failure (ARF) of COVID-19, admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Shoushtar (southwestern Iran) who underwent CPAP therapy. The Heart rate, Acidosis, Consciousness, Oxygenation, and Respiratory rate (HACOR) scores were measured before the treatment and 1 h after undergoing CPAP treatment.

In the present study, we investigated the involvement of ASIC1 in acidosis-induced neuronal death and its underlying mechanisms in HT22 neurons.
