Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the therapeutic effect of gefitinib in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its effect on the level of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in peripheral blood.

Methods: A total of 58 patients with NSCLC were treated with gefinitib (iressa) (250 mg per day). EGFR levels in the peripheral blood were measured with ELISA assay before and after treatment. Statistical analyses of patient quality of life, survival and other clinical data were conducted including logistic regression analysis, x test and t-test. Quality of life assessment was quantified based on the Chinese version of the QLQ-C30 and QLQ-LC13 questionnaires of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer.

Results: The overall response rate to iressa was 38% (22 patients), and the disease control rate (response+stable) was 74% (43 patients). The mean scores of assessment of physiological functions and comprehensive quality of life in QLQ-C30 questionnaire were significantly increased with an improvement rate of 91-100%. Similarly, the mean scores of assessment of disease symptoms in QLQ-LC12 questionnaire were significantly reduced with an overall improvement rate of 73-100). Adverse drug effects were mainly grade I and II skin rashes and diarrhea. The EGFR levels in peripheral blood were significantly decreased after treatment (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Based on our results, gefitinib showed meaningful effects in treating advanced NSCLC, significantly improving clinical symptoms and ameliorating the patient quality of life.

Background: The common drugs used for the treatment of Newly Diagnosed Multiple Myeloma (NDMM) include bortezomib and lenalidomide, but the adverse effects of lenalidomide cannot be ignored, especially when it is used in the initial therapy.

Methods: This retrospective study evaluated the efficacy and safety of a modified DVD regimen (pegylated liposomal doxorubicin, bortezomib, and dexamethasone) followed by lenalidomide in the treatment of NDMM. A total of 40 NDMM patients were treated with a reduced dose of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (20 mg/m) on day 1, subcutaneous bortezomib (1.

Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Singapore 117456, Singapore.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) methylation (DNAm) clocks estimate biological age according to DNA methylation. This study investigated the associations between measures of physical function and physical performance and ten DNAm clocks in the oldest-old in Singapore. The SG90 cohort included a subset of community-dwelling oldest-old from the Singapore Chinese Health Study (SCHS) and Singapore Longitudinal Ageing Study (SLAS).

Purpose: Major cardiovascular surgery imposes high physiologic stress, often causing severe organ dysfunction and poor outcomes. The underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated metabolic changes induced by major cardiovascular surgery and the potential role of identified metabolic signatures in postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI).

The self-assembly of fibrin is a vital process in blood clotting, primarily facilitated by the interactions between knobs "A" and "B" in the central E region of one molecule and the corresponding holes "a" and "b" in the peripheral D regions of two other fibrin molecules. However, the precise function of the interactions between knob "B" and hole "b" during fibrin polymerization remains a subject of ongoing debate. The present study focuses on investigating intermolecular interactions between knob "B" and hole "b".

Peripheral neuropathy: from guidelines to clinical practise.

Curr Opin Oncol

January 2025

Department of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Medicine, Ernst von Bergmann Hospital Potsdam, Potsdam.

Purpose Of Review: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a substantial adverse effect of anticancer therapy. No effective preventive strategies are established in clinical routine, although some forms of cryotherapy or compression therapy seem to be promising. CIPN is difficult to grade objectively and has mostly relied on a clinician- or patient-based rating that is subjective and not easily reproducible.
