Purpose: The present study evaluated electromyographic activity (EMG), masticatory performance, and tongue strength in children without and with orthodontic treatment needs.

Patients And Methods: A total of 90 children were screened and divided into the following groups: Group I (no treatment needed; mean age: 8.00 ± 0.43 years; n = 26), Group II (few malocclusions, treatment needed; mean age: 8.89 ± 0.43 years; n = 28), and Group III (slight-to-borderline treatment needed; mean age: 8.44 ± 0.22 years; n = 36). Orthodontic treatment need was classified on the basis of IOTN-DHC (Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need - Dental Health Component). The electromyographic Trigno EMG Systems was used for muscle analysis and the Iowa Oral Pressure Instrument (IOPI) was used to measure tongue strength. Data were analyzed using normality tests and one-way analysis of variance with a Bonferroni post hoc test (p ≤ 0.05).

Results: EMG in almost all mandibular movements was higher in Group III with statistically significant differences compared to position at rest: right masseter (p = 0.03); protrusion: left temporal (p = 0.02); saliva swallowing: left temporal (p = 0.05) and water swallowing: orbicularis oris mouth, right upper segment (p = 0.05). Lower masticatory performance was found in Group III, but the difference compared to Group I and II was not significant. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of tongue strength.

Conclusions: Children with borderline orthodontic treatment needs show functional disorders of the stomatognathic system.

Shear bond strength and ARI scores of metal brackets to glazed glass ceramics and zirconia: an in vitro study investigating surface treatment protocols.

BMC Oral Health

December 2024

Faculty of Dentistry, Innovative Dental Materials and Interfaces Research Unit (URB2i), UR 4462, Paris Cité University, 1 rue Maurice Arnoux, Montrouge, 92120, France.

Objective: To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) and adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores of metal brackets to glazed lithium disilicate reinforced glass-ceramics and zirconia according to various surface treatment protocols.

Methods: A total of 240 lithium disilicate ceramic (LD) and 240 zirconia (Zr) blocks were randomly divided according to sandblasting, hydrofluoric acid (HF) etching, universal primer use, and the adhesive system applied. A maxillary canine metal bracket was bonded to each sample with resin cement (Transbond XT, TXT).

Introduction: This study aimed to identify predictive factors of having a positive or negatively divergent self-perception from the normative orthodontic treatment need (N-OTN).

Methods: All eligible undergraduate students from the School of Dentistry of the XXX were recruited through convenience sampling. They were clinically evaluated to determine their N-OTN using the IOTN and were asked about their self-perceived orthodontic treatment need (S-OTN) using the same scale for both evaluations.

Objective: To evaluate the 36-month clinical performance of Single Bond Universal Adhesive (SBU; 3M ESPE, Germany) in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) using different modes of adhesion according to the FDI criteria. The primary outcome was the retention loss of the restorations, while the secondary outcomes included marginal staining, marginal adaptation, post-operative sensitivity and tooth vitality, recurrence of caries erosion and abfraction, and tooth integrity, all evaluated according to the FDI criteria.

Materials And Methods: In this study, the SBU Adhesive was applied to 246 NCCLs of 25 patients using different modes of adhesion: Self-etch (SE), selective-enamel-etching (SLE), and etch-and-rinse (ER).

Objective: The study compares and evaluates planned virtual outcomes with actual post-treatment outcomes to assess the accuracy and predictability of clinical results during presurgical infant orthopaedics (PSIO) with AlignerNAM in infants with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

Setting: Institutional study.

Participants: 14 UCLP patients.

This research evaluated the effectiveness of an online simulation-based serious game as a learning tool in diagnosis and treatment planning for oral lesions (SimOL) in comparison to a pre-recorded lecture-based approach and to determine its appropriate integration into the undergraduate dental curriculum. A crossover randomized control trial was conducted with a cohort of 77 dental undergraduates. They were randomly assigned into two groups.
