Making mistakes is part of being human and human error is normal in all areas of life (Bromiley and Mitchell 2009). In some contexts this is of little consequence, but in environments where human safety and well-being are at stake it is vital that such error is minimised. The operating theatre is one such safety critical environment. Research suggests, however, that certain factors predispose to human error. Some or all of these factors may be present in the operating theatre and, therefore, have the potential to compromise patient safety.

Song acquisition behavior observed in the songbird system provides a notable example of learning through trial- and-error which parallels human speech acquisition. Studying songbird vocal learning can offer insights into mechanisms underlying human language. We present a computational model of song learning that integrates reinforcement learning (RL) and Hebbian learning and agrees with known songbird circuitry.

Historically, forensic science results have been admitted in court, with minimal scrutiny regarding their scientific validity. However, following the National Academy of Sciences (NAS, 2009) report, the forensic community has undergone a significant transformation. This shift has demonstrated that forensic scientists and laboratories want to ensure the scientific rigor and quality of their results, but that they are often uncertain where to begin when addressing concerns about error and bias.

: Accurate tumor detection and quantification are important for optimized therapy planning and evaluation. Total tumor burden is also an appealing biomarker for clinical trials. Manual examination and annotation of oncologic PET/CT is labor-intensive and demands a high level of expertise.

Here, we evaluate the capability of both medical trainees and LLMs to recommend medical calculators in response to various multiple-choice clinical scenarios such as risk stratification, prognosis, and disease diagnosis. We assessed eight LLMs, including open-source, proprietary, and domain-specific models, with 1,009 question-answer pairs across 35 clinical calculators and measured human performance on a subset of 100 questions.
