We report on an efficient diode-pumped continuous-wave erbium-doped monoclinic double tungstate laser. It is based on a 1 at. % Er:KLu(WO) (Er:KLuW) crystal cut along the N optical indicatrix axis. The Er:KLuW microchip laser, diode pumped at 0.98 μm, generates 268 mW at 1.610 μm with a slope efficiency of 30%. The output is linearly polarized (E||N), and the laser beam is nearly diffraction limited (Mp,m2<1.1). Spectroscopic properties of Er in KLuW are also presented. The stimulated-emission cross-section σ is 0.46×10 cm at ∼1.609 μm for E||N. The microchip Er:KLuW laser outperforms the commercial Er,Yb:glass.

A nanosecond-pulsed diode-pumped Tm-doped fiber laser (TDFL) operating at 2050 nm is reported based on a flexible photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a core diameter of 50 µm. Analytical evaluation of reabsorption effects and optimization of the fiber length allow enhanced pulse energy extraction at long wavelengths. This enables the generation of Gaussian-shaped pulses with pulse energies of 1.

After using a pair of prisms for dispersion compensation, the narrowest pulse width of 70 fs was achieved at a repetition rate of 100 MHz. The mode-locked laser had a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 55 dB and a beam quality factor of less than 1.

Multimode fibers are attractive for high-power lasers if transverse modes are efficiently controlled. Here, a dielectric thin-film mirror (R~20%) is micro-fabricated on the central area of the end face of a 1 km multimode 100/140 µm graded-index fiber and tested as the output mirror of a Raman laser with highly multimode (M~34) 940 nm diode pumping. In the cavity with highly reflective input FBG, Raman lasing of the Stokes wave at 976 nm starts at the threshold pump power of ~80 W.
