Hastelloy X (HX) is a Ni-based superalloy which suffers from high crack susceptibility during the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process. In this work, the microstructure of as-built HX samples was rigorously investigated to understand the main mechanisms leading to crack formation. The microstructural features of as-built HX samples consisted of very fine dendrite architectures with dimensions typically less than 1 µm, coupled with the formation of sub-micrometric carbides, the largest ones were mainly distributed along the interdendritic regions and grain boundaries. From the microstructural analyses, it appeared that the formation of intergranular carbides provided weaker zones, which combined with high thermal residual stresses resulted in hot cracks formation along the grain boundaries. The carbides were extracted from the austenitic matrix and characterized by combining different techniques, showing the formation of various types of Mo-rich carbides, classified as M₆C, MC and MC type. The first two types of carbides are typically found in HX alloy, whereas the last one is a metastable carbide probably generated by the very high cooling rates of the process.

Ultrasound can improve the quality of finished products by reducing porosity and enhancing microstructure in selective laser melting, directed energy deposition, and laser beam welding. This study evaluates the efficiency of ultrasound produced by a pulsed laser via the optoacoustic effect. A quantitative model of collapse of vapor-gas bubbles has been developed under the conditions of ultrasonic treatment at near resonance frequencies.

In addition to the inherent limitations of carbons to melt or flow, a vast majority of carbon precursors deforms during carbonisation, with stereolithography of thermoset resins being the preferred technology for 3D printing of carbons. An alternative is now presented with the possibility of using a melting-based technology, selective laser sintering (SLS), to fabricate 3D structures that withstand carbonisation. The key factor that makes this happen is whey powder, a natural, abundant and cheap by-product of the dairy industry.

This work investigated the mechanical and catalytic degradation properties of FeMnCoCr-based high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with diverse compositions and porous structures fabricated via selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing for wastewater treatment applications. The effects of Mn content (0, 30 at%, and 50 at%) and topological structures (gyroid, diamond, and sea urchin-inspired shell) on the compression properties and catalytic efficiency of the FeMnCoCr HEAs were discussed. The results indicated that an increase in the Mn content led to a phase structure transition that optimized mechanical properties and catalytic activities.

The metastable β-Ti21S alloy exhibits a lower elastic modulus than Ti-6Al-4V ELI while maintaining high mechanical strength and ductility. To address stress shielding, this study explores the integration of lattice structures within prosthetics, which is made possible through additive manufacturing. Continuous adhesion between the implant and bone is essential; therefore, auxetic bow-tie structures with a negative Poisson's ratio are proposed for regions under tensile stress, while Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures with a positive Poisson's ratio are recommended for areas under compressive stress.
