The role of aromaticity in porphyrinoids is a current subject of debate due to the intricate structure of these macrocycles, which can adopt Hückel, Möbius and even figure-eight conformers. One of the main challenges in these large π-conjugated structures is identifying the most conjugated pathway because, among aromaticity descriptors, there are very few that can be applied coherently to this variety of conformers. In this paper, we have investigated the conjugated pathways in nine porphyrinoid compounds using several aromaticity descriptors, including BLA, BOA, FLU and HOMA, as well as the recently introduced AV1245 and AV indices. All the indices agree on the general features of these compounds, such as the fulfillment of Hückel's rule or which compounds should be more or less aromatic from the series. However, our results evince the difficulty of finding the most aromatic pathway in the macrocycle for large porphyrinoids. In fact, only AV is capable of recognizing the annulene pathway as the most aromatic one in the nine studied structures. Finally, we study the effect of the exchange in DFT functionals on the description of the aromaticity of the porphyrinoids. The amount of exact exchange quantitatively changes the picture for most aromaticity descriptors, AV being the only exception that shows the same qualitative results in all cases.

Acid catalyzed condensation of -alkyltripyrranes with trialdehydes derived from 1,3-cyclopentadiene or methyl-1,3-cyclopentadiene, followed by oxidation with aqueous ferric chloride solutions, gave 23-alkyl-21-carbaporphyrin-2-carbaldehydes in 22-27% yield together with weakly aromatic oxycarbaporphyrins. The carbaporphyrins reacted with palladium(II) acetate or nickel(II) acetate to give organometallic complexes but in both cases alkyl group migration took place to generate 21-alkyl derivatives. Although this type of reactivity had been observed previously for palladium complexes, this is the first time the phenomenon has been seen in nickel(II) carbaporphyrins.

A series of porphyrin analogues with fused 1,10-phenanthroline units were synthesized. The proton NMR spectra for phenanthroline-fused heteroporphyrins showed significantly upfield shifted -proton resonances compared to related porphyrinoid systems and the peaks corresponding to alkyl substituents directly attached to these macrocycles were also observed further upfield. These results indicate that the presence of the phenanthroline unit leads to reduced diatropicity, but the internal NH resonance was also further upfield, a result that is inconsistent with this interpretation.

Sub--benziporphyrin: a subcarbaporphyrinoid and its B complex with an unprecedented planar tridentate 14π-aromatic network.

Sub--benziporphyrins were synthesized by Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling of ,'-diboryl--benzitripyrrane with 9,10-bis(1,1-dibromomethylenyl)anthracene. Reaction of sub--benziporphyrin with PhBCl and triethylamine gave its B-phenyl complex as a tetracoordinate nonaromatic B complex. In contrast, the reaction with BBr and triethylamine furnished a neutral B porphyrinoid with a planar and triangular coordination as the first example, in which the -phenylene unit was partially reduced, allowing for the global 14π-aromatic circuit.

Retrosynthetically designed and syntheses of three unprecedented core modified N-confused porphyrinoids exhibiting vis-NIR absorption with tunable aromaticity is reported. Controlled modification of types of oxidants (chloranil vs. DDQ) has led to the isolation of 18π-aromatic porphyrinoid 7 (upon chloranil oxidation) while DDQ oxidation has led to 18 e σ-aromatic porphyrinoids 8 and 9.

Two contradictory theories, Clar's sextet and resonance theory, explain the stability of conjugated macrocycles using localized and delocalized models, respectively. To reconcile these theories and gain better insights, PAH-containing porphyrinoids were chosen as a representative class of conjugated macrocycles. Two types of Clar's sextets were identified and proposed for the first time based on their interaction with global conjugated pathways: (i) shared sextets that integrate with and perturb the global resonance pathway, and (ii) independent sextets that are separate from the pathway and potentially stabilize or do not perturb it.
