Taxonomy of high pressure vibration spectra of zincblende semiconductor alloys based on the percolation model.

Sci Rep

Institute of Physics, Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Informatics, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, ul. Grudziądzka 5, 87-100, Toruń, Poland.

Due to their simple structure (two bond species randomly arranged on a cubic lattice), the zincblende ABC semiconductor alloys (zb-SCA) set a benchmark to explore how physical properties are impacted by disorder. A longstanding controversy was whether the lattice dynamics (phonons), governed by the bond force constant, i.e.

This study investigated changes in white matter (WM) morphology following complex motor learning, that is, the learning to walk a slackline. A sample of young adults from the general population underwent brain imaging before the slackline intervention, after successful learning, and after a subsequent follow-up period by applying state-of-the-art measures for the assessment of micro- and macrostructural characteristics of WM fiber tracts (voxel-based and fixel-based). A randomly assigned control group (CG) was scanned at the same time points of assessment but received no intervention over the study period.

End-of-life conversations about death and dying from volunteer perspectives: A qualitative study.

Palliat Support Care

June 2024

Faculty of Nursing, Third Floor ECHA Building, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada.

Objectives: Although often unrecognized, volunteers fulfill many essential roles in hospices and other end-of-life care settings. Volunteers complement the actions of professionals in fulfilling many extra care needs, such as delivering newspapers and tidying bedsides. We explored end-of-life conversations about death and dying between hospice volunteers and terminally ill people, with a particular emphasis on any expressed desire to die.

TidyGEO is a Web-based tool for downloading, tidying, and reformatting data series from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). As a freely accessible repository with data from over 6 million biological samples across more than 4000 organisms, GEO provides diverse opportunities for secondary research. Although scientists may find assay data relevant to a given research question, most analyses require sample-level annotations.

Article Synopsis
  • A 35-year-old male had multiple car accidents, inability to keep his room tidy, and developed speech and walking difficulties beginning at age 34.
  • His initial examination revealed mild cognitive impairment with a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 23, but he was still able to walk and talk independently.
  • After three months, his condition worsened, leading to severe loss of speech, coordination issues, and mobility problems, ultimately diagnosed as Sez6l2 antibody-associated autoimmune cerebellar ataxia, which improved slightly with immunotherapy.
