First Aid for Skin Tears by Mini Patch Grafting from the Flap Edge.

Background: Traumatic skin tears often occur in patients with dystrophic skin. Closing them with adhesive skin closures is useful for patients with a healthy flap, but occasionally fails to cover the entire defect. We describe a simple technique to perform mini patch grafting on the remaining raw surface without damaging healthy skin.

Discussion: The skin flap is spread out and fixed with adhesive skin strips to minimize defects first. Small pieces of skin are obtained by trimming the edges of the skin flap with curved tip scissors. They are placed on the defect with free spaces of 3 to 5 mm between each of the grafts. Then the whole wound is covered with a dressing and gauze pads. Healing of the ulcer could be markedly promoted with little enlargement of the skin defect.

Conclusions: Small pieces of skin trimmed out from the edge of skin flap can be used as a mini patch graft that remarkably enhances healing of remaining open surface.

Background: Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disease manifested by depigmented patches of skin devoid of melanocytes. Baricitinib, a JAK inhibitor selectively targeting JAK1/2, has shown preliminary efficacy for vitiligo. We aimed to assess the efficacy and tolerability of combination therapy with baricitinib and narrowband UV-B (NB-UVB) to treat active nonsegmental vitiligo (NSV).

DNA Origami Colloidal Crystals: Opportunities and Challenges.

Nano Lett

January 2025

KU-KIST Graduate School of Converging Science and Technology, Korea University, Seoul 02841, Republic of Korea.

Over the last three decades, colloidal crystallization has provided an easy-to-craft platform for mesoscale engineering of photonic and phononic crystals. Nevertheless, the crystal lattices achieved thus far with commodity colloids are largely limited to symmetric and densely packed structures, restricting their functionalities. To obtain non-close-packed crystals and the resulting complexity of the available structures, directional binding between "patchy" colloids has been pursued.

Oxygen saturation is a crucial indicator in the management of various diseases and in preoperative diagnosis, and the detection of oxygen content is valuable in guiding clinical treatment. However, as the classical and dominant oxygen detection strategies, current photoelectric oximeters and electrochemical-based blood gas analyzers often suffer from significant interindividual variation and poor compliance, respectively. In recent years, wearable microneedles (MNs) for analyzing biomarkers in interstitial fluid (ISF) have received great attention and recognition mainly for the reason that the content of the substances distributed in ISF has a better correlation with that in blood circulation compared with other body fluids such as sweat and saliva.

Primary transcatheter dilation of the pulmonary valve in cyanotic patients with tetralogy of Fallot and dominant pulmonary valve stenosis.

Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, Department of Pediatric Cardiology, German Pediatric Heart Centre, University Hospital Bonn, Bonn, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • * A retrospective analysis of 19 patients showed significant improvement in blood oxygen saturation after PVB, with many experiencing positive changes in pulmonary valve and artery measurements, although some faced recurrent desaturation requiring further interventions.
  • * The findings suggest that PVB is a safe and effective early palliative measure for managing cyanosis in TOF patients, allowing for improved pulmonary development and delaying the need for more invasive surgical repairs, with BRCTs not significantly altering surgical approaches.
