AI Article Synopsis

  • The study focuses on 11 patients suffering from severe pemphigus, which is a challenging autoimmune disorder.
  • Researchers investigate the long-term effects of using rituximab as a maintenance therapy to prevent relapses in these patients.
  • The findings aim to provide insights into the effectiveness and potential for rituximab as a standalone treatment option for pemphigus management.

Article Abstract

This case-series study of 11 patients with severe, difficult-to-treat pemphigus examines whether rituximab alone can be used long-term as maintenance therapy for prevention of relapse.

The multicenter, phase III GMMG ReLApsE trial (EudraCT-No:2009-013856-61) randomized relapsed and/or refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) patients equally to lenalidomide/dexamethasone (LEN/DEX, 25mg days 1-21/40mg weekly, 4-week cycles) re-induction, salvage high dose chemotherapy (sHDCT, melphalan 200mg/m2), autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) and LEN maintenance (10mg/day; transplant arm, n=139) versus continuous LEN/DEX (control arm, n=138). Ninety-four percent of patients had received frontline HDCT/ASCT. We report an updated analysis of survival endpoints with a median follow-up of 99 months.

Background: Several clinical trials, including the recently published the GRAND PLAN study from Vancouver Infectious Diseases Center (VIDC), have demonstrated the efficacy of hepatitis C (HCV) therapy among active drug users, including those facing significant addiction-related and social challenges. In the GRAND PLAN, we documented sustained virological response post-treatment Week12 (SVR12) in 108/117 (92.3 %) individuals (108/111 (mITT) or 97.

BMI trajectories are associated with NAFLD and advanced fibrosis via aging-inflammation mediation.

BMC Public Health

Background: As the global epidemic of obesity fuels metabolic conditions, the burden of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) will become enormous. Abundant studies revealed the association between high body mass index (BMI) and NAFLD but overlooked the BMI patterns across life stages. We aimed to explore how BMI trajectories over age relate to NAFLD.

Floodplain forests drive fruit-eating fish diversity at the Amazon Basin-scale.

Unlike most rivers globally, nearly all lowland Amazonian rivers have unregulated flow, supporting seasonally flooded floodplain forests. Floodplain forests harbor a unique tree species assemblage adapted to flooding and specialized fauna, including fruit-eating fish that migrate seasonally into floodplains, favoring expansive floodplain areas. Frugivorous fish are forest-dependent fauna critical to forest regeneration via seed dispersal and support commercial and artisanal fisheries.

Background: Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) is an effective treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease. Although MHD can prolong the survival of patients, their quality of life is lower and the fatality rate is higher. This work analyzed the factors related to the autogenous arteriovenous fistula (AVF)-like expansion of non-diabetic MHD patients by vascular ultrasound (VUS).
