Layered silicates are versatile materials that can be grafted with different organosilanes for several applications. Despite this, there are few studies on the use of layered silicate-based materials in CO adsorption. In this regard, the present study describes the synthesis of organo-magadiite followed by simultaneous grafting with two organosilanes ((3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTS) and N-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine (TMSPETA)) to prepare an adsorbent labeled Soft-Pillared@Magadiite. The adsorbents were characterized through XRD, C- and Si-NMR, TGA/DTG, and elemental analyses of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen (CHN). The results suggest that this adsorbent has an expanded interlayer space (3.05 nm) that is larger than the interlayer space when the layered material is grafted with the organosilanes separately, and it may display improved CO adsorption. The CO adsorption was evaluated by TGA, CO-TPD, and DSC. Moreover, the adsorption isotherms were fitted using a pseudo-second order, a fractional order, and Avrami models. The optimum adsorption temperature of Soft-Pillared@Magadiite was 25 °C, and the adsorption capacity and efficiency were 0.36 mmol g and 0.15, respectively, obtained using 5 vol% CO in He for 3 h. The CO-TPD shows that the desorption of CO occurs below 90 °C, and from DSC, it is found that thermodynamic parameters, specifically sensible heat and heat of regeneration, are low as compared to those of aqueous MEA solution; the current technology indicates that Soft-Pillared@Magadiite has a good potential for CO adsorption.

Integrating Aerogel into van der Waals Crystals for a High-Strength Thermal Insulator.

Nano Lett

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Yonsei University, Seoul 03722, Republic of Korea.

Achieving low thermal conductivity and high mechanical strength presents a material design challenge due to intrinsic trade-offs, such as the aerogel's porosity, impeding applications in construction, industry, and aerospace. This study presents a composite that incorporates a silica aerogel within a thermally expanded 2D layered vermiculite matrix. This design overcomes limitations imposed by van der Waals bonding lengths, typically less than 10 Å, which hinder aerogel integration with van der Waals crystals.

The textural properties of synthetic and natural clays in the sodium form and exchanged with tetramethylammonium cations (TMA) were characterized using N and Ar physisorption isotherms at cryogenic temperatures. Specific surface areas and micro/mesoporous volumes were determined using the BET and the models. The analysis requires the use of reference isotherms measured at the same temperature on the surface of non-porous materials with an identical chemical composition.

Adsorption Structure and Selectivity of Phenols in Water-Immersed Organomontmorillonite Investigated by Molecular Simulation.

The two-dimensional interlayer space of layered materials has been highlighted due to their adsorption property, whose nanostructure in the water-immersed state is scarcely understood by experiment. Recent developments in molecular simulation have enabled researchers to investigate the interlayer structure, but water content is necessary for accurate modeling. In the present study, we proposed a theoretical method to estimate the saturated water content and adsorption selectivity of trichlorophenol and phenol in montmorillonite modified with hexadecyltrimethylammonium ions.

Dihydromyricetin (DHM), the primary active compound in vine tea possesses various pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, along with high biosafety. However, its oral delivery remains a significant challenge. Montmorillonite (MMT), the primary component of bentonite, is a commonly used drug in the clinical treatment of gastrointestinal diseases and serves as an excellent drug carrier due to its intercalation capability.

The technology to solve the problem of the efficient pollutant removal in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was the ultimate goal. There was an urgent need to achieving higher catalytic activity and oxidation efficiency. Herein, we present a MgAl-based layered double hydroxide assembled as a 2D confined catalyst (MgAl-Co-LDH) with Co metal in chelated form (Co-EDTA) for highly efficient PMS activation degrading sulfamethoxazole (SMX).
