Bats are considered to play a significant role in the epidemiology of histoplasmosis, worldwide. We investigated the occurrence of H. capsulatum in lung samples from 89 bats, from urban areas in Southeastern Brazil, using nested PCR based on ribosomal DNA. Fungal DNA was detected in 31/89 samples (34.8%), of which 13/31 were Molossids (41.9%), 4/31 Eumops spp. (12.9%), 2/31 Artibeus lituratus (6.5%), and 12/31 others (38.7%). This is the first report of natural infection by H. capsulatum in A. lituratus in Southeastern Brazil, which reinforces the importance of these synanthropic animals in the epidemiology of histoplasmosis in urban areas.

Organotin compounds (OTs) used to be the most widely used biocide in antifouling paint systems, but the International Maritime Organization (IMO) banned them because of their high environmental toxicity to non-target organisms. Currently, at least 25 active ingredients are being employed as biocides in antifouling paint formulations. Creatine monohydrate supplementation (CrM) is a safe and effective intervention for improving certain aspects of sport, exercise performance, and health across the lifespan. Despite its evidence-based pedigree, several questions and misconceptions about CrM remain. To initially address some of these concerns, our group published a narrative review in 2021 discussing the scientific evidence as to whether CrM leads to water retention and fat accumulation, is a steroid, causes hair loss, dehydration or muscle cramping, adversely affects renal and liver function, and if CrM is safe and/or effective for children, adolescents, biological females, and older adults.

The disease is linked to a pro-inflammatory environment in the peritoneal fluid of patients, with high levels of cytokines, growth factors, and reactive oxygen species. Changes in the peritoneal fluid, such as altered immune cells and cytokines, can be linked to the immune balance in endometriosis.
