Differential UV spectroscopy, defined as the difference in UV absorbance spectra before and after chlorination, has shown great potential to predict disinfection by-product (DBP) concentrations at laboratory scale. However, so far, no results have been reported on the full scale application of differential UV spectroscopy in drinking water treatment facilities. The objectives of this study are to determine if relationships can be developed between differential UV absorbance and DBP concentrations, for both regulated and unregulated DBPs, in a full-scale facility and to determine if these relationships vary throughout the year with variations in raw water quality and treatment conditions. The results show that linear and power relationships between differential UV absorbance and DBP concentrations can be developed (0.62 ≤ R ≤ 0.99), although differences between relationships obtained in lab- and full-scale conditions need further investigation. Finally, the relationships obtained are different from one sampling campaign to another, which raises the question of whether it is possible to determine relationships that are stable enough to be used as adequate feedback on DBP concentrations.

Article Synopsis
  • Regulated disinfection byproducts in drinking water, like trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids, show higher levels in summer and vary based on water sources and treatment practices.
  • Monitoring usually relies on yearly averages, meaning short-term spikes in these chemicals may be overlooked, raising concerns about potential health impacts on vulnerable groups like infants and toddlers.
  • This study examines how exposure levels differ across a drinking water network, finding that while overall exposure to chloroform was below toxic levels, the data can help public health officials identify high-risk areas and better manage water safety.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of chronic sympathoinhibition on glucose uptake by the myocardium and by the skeletal muscle in an animal model of obesity associated with leptin signaling deficiency. 6 obese Zucker rats (OZR) and 6 control Lean Zucker rats (LZR) were studied during basal conditions, chronic clonidine administration (30 days, 300 µg/kg), and washout recovery period. Glucose uptake in the myocardium and in the skeletal muscle was measured using positron emission tomography (PET) and 2-[18F] fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ([18F]FDG).

Background: Maternal hemoglobin (Hb) is related to nutritional status, and it widely fluctuates during pregnancy. However, the relationship between Hb and blood pressure (BP) during pregnancy is unclear. This study aimed to estimate the associations between maternal Hb in various trimesters and its changes with BP during pregnancy.

Background: Vascular calcification (VC), especially coronary artery calcification (CAC), serves as a robust predictor of cardiovascular mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Recent studies have revealed that the presence of extra-coronary calcifications (ECCs) contributes to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Elevated myocardial injury markers predict mortality risk in CKD patients and are associated with CVD.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) with teratogenicity, carcinogenesis, and mutagenesis, is a ubiquitous endocrine disruptor in the environment. The widespread usage of plastic mulch has resulted in a severe DBP pollution problem in agricultural soil. One of the most vital ways to mitigate the DBP pollution problem is to use DBP degrading bacteria to reduce the concentration of DBP in agricultural soil.
