In this study, one of the largest estuaries in the Gulf Coast of USA was investigated for Cu forms and fractionations. Both the water and sediment samples in subsegments of the Lake Pontchartrain basin were collected and Cu forms in dissolved phase and sediment phase were analyzed. The BCR sequential extraction procedure was used to extract Cu in exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable and residual fractions in sediments. The results showed that the residual fraction of Cu was a major contributor in Tangipahoa River and I-10 Bridge sediments, while the residual and oxidizable fractions in the case of oil refinery sediments. Cu partitioning in Lake Pontchartrain basin water showed the decreasing trend of inert > labile > organic in both spring and summer. The release of Cu from the sediments into the water column was greater in summer as compared to spring and vice versa. Lower temperature helps in the adsorption of Cu on the surface of sediments in early spring due to low disturbance and temperature.

During the spring and summer of 2019, an unprecedented cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom (cyanoHAB) was responsible for beach advisories on 25 beaches along the Mississippi Sound for over 3 months. Due to the preceding heavy rainfall and flooding within the Mississippi River watershed, for the first time in history, the Bonnet Carré Spillway (BCS) opened twice in one year during 2019. The coastal cyanoHAB coincided with the second BCS opening.

Mississippi River water levels typically rise in the early spring after snow melt in the extensive watershed. However, in 2016, warm air temperatures coupled with high precipitation led to a historically early river flood pulse, resulting in the opening of a flood release valve (Bonnet Carré Spillway) in early January to protect the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. The goal of this research was to determine the ecosystem response of this wintertime nutrient flood pulse on the receiving estuarine system and compare it to historical opening responses, which are generally several months later.
