Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have been isolated successfully from the tiger grouper intestine. However, their genus or species have not been identified. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to characterize the three isolated LAB (KSBU-12C, KSBU-5Da, and KSBU-9) based on their phenotype and genotype. The LAB phenotype was examined by observing morphological features including cell morphology, spore production and motility. The physiological tests were performed in 6.5% NaCl at the  temperatures of 10 C and 45 C, and the biochemical tests were evaluated based on the production of enzymes catalase, oxidase and arginine dehydrolase, following  the Standard Analytical Profile Index, API 50 CH kit.  The genotype was examined based on 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis , and the products were analyzed using the BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) NCBI database. The three isolates (KSBU-5Da, KSBU-12C, and KSBU-9) were categorized into the genus . 16S rDNA sequence analysis indicated that the isolates had 99% similarity to ATCC 9790, registered in GenBank with accession number NR_075022.1. It was concluded that the three LAB isolates taken from the tiger grouper are .

Article Synopsis
  • Jinhu groupers, a hybrid of tiger and potato groupers, exhibit rapid growth and stress resistance, but they experience delayed gonadal development compared to their tiger grouper parent.
  • A transcriptome analysis identified 3034 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), revealing key processes like oocyte meiosis and ovarian steroidogenesis that may explain the differences in gonadal development between the two types of groupers.
  • Weighted gene co-expression network analysis highlighted three gene modules associated with gonadal development across brain, pituitary, and gonadal tissues, providing insights into the molecular reasons behind the delayed gonadal development in Jinhu groupers.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the metabolic activity of gut microbiota from marine species (grouper, green mussel, and giant tiger prawn) in transforming environmental pollutants, especially plastic additives.
  • Researchers discovered that these microbial cultures can metabolize various substances, including organophosphate flame retardants and bisphenols, with triphenyl phosphate being rapidly converted to diphenyl phosphate.
  • Key microbial genera like Escherichia-Shigella, Citrobacter, and Anaerospora were identified as important for these transformations, indicating a need for further research on their roles in bioavailability and environmental impact.

The marine leech Pterobdella arugamensis is a hematophagous parasite, and the extent of injury to the host largely depends on the number of attached leeches. This study aimed to assess the pathogenicity of marine leeches in Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer) and tiger grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) fingerlings under laboratory conditions. Five groups of healthy Asian seabass and tiger grouper were exposed to varying numbers of marine leeches (0, 1, 10, 30, or 70 per fish) for 7 d.

The tiger grouper (), an important mariculture fish in Southeast Asia, faces increasing health issues in recent years. Phellodendri Cortex (PC) is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine that exhibits a variety of beneficial effects on tiger groupers. The effects of PC, however, varies with the period of dietary intervention.

This study evaluates the effects of different levels of FAM on liver and intestinal tissue structure, serum biochemical parameters, intestinal digestive enzyme, and microbiota structure of tiger grouper. Fish were fed with diets (crude protein ≥ 48.
