Hyperhomocysteinemia and increased red cell distribution width (RDW) are associated with a higher possibility of adverse clinical outcomes of hypertension. The study aims to validate the effect of homocysteine (Hcy) and RDW on cardiovascular events (CVE) and investigate whether RDW is independently associated with serum Hcy in patients with essential hypertension (EH). The study reviewed 804 patients with newly diagnosed EH in our hospital. The clinical characteristics and laboratory results of all subjects were grouped according to the presence/absence of CVE. Patients in the CVE group had higher RDW and Hcy, as compared to the patients in the no CVE group. Multiple Cox regression analysis demonstrated that both RDW (HR = 1.24, 95% CI =1.02-1.56, = 0.002) and Hcy (HR = 1.37, 95% CI = 1.02-1.80, < 0.001) resulted significantly related to the CVE. Subsequent analysis found that patients with high RDW had higher Hcy levels as compared with those with low RDW ( = 0.007). Although Pearson's correlation suggested that RDW was positively correlated with Hcy (r = 0.122, = 0.028), no significant correlation was observed between RDW and Hcy (β = 0.15, = 0.126) after adjusted for a series of potential confounders using multiple linear regression analysis. In conclusion, RDW is not correlated with Hcy in patients with EH. Both RDW and Hcy are independent risk factors for CVE in newly diagnostic EH and have the potential to improve risk stratification.

Background: Alterations in the level of neurotransmitters are evident in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Vitamin B12 mediates the synthesis of neurotransmitters, and hence, vitamin B12 deficiency could be associated with depression.

Aims And Objectives: To assess the levels of serum vitamin B12, homocysteine (Hcy), and haematological profiles in patients of MDD.

Cardiovascular complications in patients undergoing thoracic surgery, which physicians have a limited ability to predict, are often unavoidable and resulting in adverse outcome. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), the gold standard of cardiopulmonary function evaluation, has also been proved to be a preoperative risk assessment tool. Meanwhile, elevated red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has surged as a biochemical marker in the occurrence of cardiovascular disease.

Study on the correlation between red cell distribution width, homocysteine, lipoprotein(a), and left atrial diameter in newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients.

Department of Cardiology, The First Affiliated Hospital, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, Nanchang, Jiangxi, China.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the correlations between red cell distribution width (RDW), homocysteine (Hcy), lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], and left atrial diameter (LAD) measured by echocardiography in newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) (referred to as "new-onset AF") patients and their predictive value for new-onset AF. The findings of this study provide a basis for early clinical identification of the risk of new-onset AF.

Patients And Methods: Eighty-nine newly diagnosed NVAF patients (46 males and 43 females) admitted to the Department of Cardiology, First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University, from January 2017 to January 2023 were included in the new-onset AF group.

Objective: Rhesus monkeys are increasingly used in biomedical research, which makes their hematological and biochemical parameters increasingly important in preclinical research. Since age and sex can influence blood parameters, establishing reference intervals for such parameters based on age and sex becomes along with identifying the effect of age and sex on those parameters.

Methods: A total of 1385 healthy Chinese rhesus monkeys (548 males and 837 females) anesthetized with ketamine were selected and segregated by age (six groups) and sex.

A comprehensive understanding of phenotypes related to CKD will facilitate the identification and management of CKD. We aimed to panoramically test and validate associations between multiple phenotypes and CKD using a phenotype-wide association study (PheWAS). 15,815 subjects from cross-sectional cohorts of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2006) were randomly 50:50 split into training and testing sets.
