Fiber-based artificial muscles are soft actuators used to mimic the movement of human muscles. However, using high modulus oxide ceramics to fabricate artificial muscles with high energy and power is a challenge as they are prone to brittle fracture during torsion. Here, a ceramic metallization strategy is reported that solves the problem of low torsion and low ductility of alumina (AlO) ceramics by chemical plating a thin copper layer on alumina filaments.

Five commercially available cut-resistant gloves were sourced from four different worldwide manufacturers which were advertised to contain graphene. A method was developed to assess the fibers composing each glove, including dissolution of the constituent fibers using sulfuric acid or liquid paraffin at elevated temperature, to extract and analyze particle additives. Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was applied to fibers and extracted particles for morphological and elemental analysis; Raman spectroscopy was applied to discern the composition of carbonaceous materials for the ultimate purpose of identifying any graphenic additives.

Dynamic covalent polymer networks (DCPN) provide an important solution to the challenging recyclability of thermoset elastomers. However, dynamic bonds exhibit relatively weak bond energies, considerably decreasing the mechanical properties of DCPN. Herein, a novel reinforcement strategy for DCPN involving the in situ formation of supramolecular organic nanofillers through asynchronous polymerization is proposed.

Biomechanical comparison of the efficacy of Cfr-PEEK and titanium systems in the fixation following sagittal split advancement osteotomy: a biomechanical study.

BMC Oral Health

January 2025

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Ordu University, Cumhuriyet Yerleşkesi Cumhuriyet Mahallesi, 52200, Ordu, Türkiye, Turkey.

Background: This study evaluates the efficacy of carbon fiber reinforced Polyetheretherketone (Cfr-PEEK) in fixation after sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) by comparing it with titanium in vitro.

Methods: Twenty-eight sheep hemimandibles were randomly assigned to four groups for SSRO surgery. Fixation was performed with a 4-hole titanium mini plate for 5 mm advancement in Group 1, with a 4-hole Cfr-PEEK mini plate for 5 mm advancement for Group 2, with a 4-hole titanium mini plate for 10 mm advancement for Group 3, and with a 4-hole Cfr-PEEK mini plate for 10 mm advancement for Group 4.
