Published: March 2015

Cases: We present three cases of checkrein deformity associated with intra-articular talar fracture. Two of the cases were secondary to entrapment of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon between fracture fragments, and one was related to the increased pathway of the FHL tendon around the dislocated talar body. All cases were diagnosed and treated on the day of injury.

Conclusion: Physicians should suspect the entrapment of the FHL tendon in cases of flexion deformity of the hallux associated with talar fracture. Proper examination of the forefoot when a patient presents with a hindfoot injury will help to avoid missing such deformities.
