Background: Conflicting data have been published on whether an association exists between atopic dermatitis (AD) and nonmelanoma skin cancer. This study aimed to determine whether individuals with AD had an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) development.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective, case-control study of patients residing in Olmsted County, Minnesota. Cases were selected from patients seen at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) who had an initial SCC diagnosis (either invasive SCC or SCC in situ) from January 1, 1996, through December 23, 2010. Age- and sex-matched controls were selected from patients seen at Mayo Clinic with no history of SCC before the case event date.

Results: Three hundred ninety-nine individuals with a documented history of SCC were identified and matched with 780 controls who did not have a history of SCC. After adjusting for race, smoking history, ionizing radiation exposure, corticosteroid and cyclosporine use, and non-SCC skin cancers, the odds ratio for SCC development between patients with history of AD versus patients without history of AD was 1.75 (95% CI, 1.05-2.93).

Conclusions: Our findings support an increased risk of SCC development in the setting of AD.

The rare coexistence of gastric and esophagus squamous cell carcinoma: a case report.

Pan Afr Med J

December 2024

Department of Hepatogastroenterology and Proctology Medicine B, Ibn Sina University Hospital Center, Mohamed V University of Rabat, Rabat, Morocco.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the stomach is a rare entity with fewer than 100 cases of primary SCC reported in the literature, while esophageal SCC is prevalent and more common. However, a synchronous squamous cell carcinoma found in the esophagus and stomach remains very uncommon. We present the case of a 64-year-old with a history of dysphagia who had an endoscopy that showed an impassable stenosis of the middle esophagus, with histopathology in favor of an esophagus squamous cell carcinoma.

Introduction: Recurrent oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) poses significant challenges in treatment, requiring a multifaceted approach for effective management.

Case Presentation: We present the case of a 68-year-old patient with a history of keratonizing SCC of the mandibular gingiva, treated with surgical resection, adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) to a total dose of 60 Gy in 30 fractions and 6 cycles of concurrent chemotherapy. After 6 years of follow-up, the patient experienced a local late recurrence in clinical stage rT4N0M0 requiring palliative chemotherapy (6 cycles of PF regimen).

Our objectives were to describe the confirmed bacteriological diagnosis of mastitis pathogens cultured from cases of nonsevere clinical mastitis (CM) identified as gram-positive (GP) using on-farm culture and to compare differences in bacteriological cure (BC) based on antimicrobial (AM) therapy. Cows that developed nonsevere CM in a single quarter were enrolled in a randomized clinical trial based on microbial growth on GP selective agars. Cows were randomly assigned to receive a once-daily intramammary treatment: 3 d hetacillin (n = 69), 3 d ceftiofur (n = 69), 8 d ceftiofur (n = 70), or to a nontreated group (n = 32).

Variation in partial direct costs of dry cow therapy on 37 large dairy herds.

JDS Commun

November 2024

Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824.

The objective of this observational study was to estimate partial direct costs of dry cow antibiotic therapy (DCT) protocols used on 37 large dairy herds in Wisconsin and to estimate the potential monetary savings and reduction in antimicrobial usage (AMU) if selective DCT was used. Partial direct costs of DCT were calculated using costs of intramammary (IMM) antimicrobials and teat sealants. Data were retrospectively collected on 37 large dairy farms for a period of 1 yr and included the total number of cows dried off, types of IMM antimicrobial used, and product prices (obtained from farm invoices).

Article Synopsis
  • - Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the eighth most common cancer worldwide and has a high potential for spreading to other parts of the body.
  • - A rare case involving a 67-year-old man with a history of cervical esophagus SCC showed unusual metastasis to the patella, causing symptoms like knee pain, leukocytosis, and anemia.
  • - The case emphasizes the need for awareness of atypical metastatic sites in ESCC, advocating for a specialized, multidisciplinary approach to effectively manage such complex situations.
