The air-dried fruit hull of Phyllanthus emblica L. was extracted with 95% ethanol, and then the extract was partitioned by diethyl ether and ethyl acetate (EA). The EA fraction was then subjected to separation and purification using silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography repeatedly to obtain five hydrolysable tannins. They were identified as mucic acid 1,4-lactone 3-o-gallate (C1), isocorilagin (C2), chebulanin (C3), chebulagic acid (C4) and isomallotusinin (C5) using mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. Isomallotusinin and chebulanin were identified from emblica dried fruit hull for the first time, and isomallotusinin was the first time identified from Phyllanthus. Furthermore, the antioxidant abilities of these hydrolysable tannins were investigated using DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging systems. All hydrolysable tannins showed strong DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. Isomallotusinin and chebulagic acid exhibited the highest antioxidant activity compared to other purified compounds tested.

In barley having adherent hulls, an irreversible connection between the pericarp with both palea and lemma is formed during grain maturation. A mutation in the () gene prevents this connection and leads to the formation of barley with non-adherent hulls. A genetic model of two isogenic lines was used to elucidate the genetic mechanisms of hull adhesion: a doubled haploid line having adherent hulls and its derivative with non-adherent hulls obtained by targeted mutagenesis of the gene.

This article presents a comprehensive overview of upcycling commercial nut byproducts (such as Brazil nut, cashew, hazelnut, macadamia, peanut (also known as a legume), pecan, pine nut, pistachio, and walnut) for food, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical applications. Upcycling nut byproducts, namely husk/hull, hard shell, brown skin, defatted flour/meal/cake, pine cone, cashew nut shell liquid, cashew apple, walnut septum, and dreg/okara, has great potential, not only to reduce/minimise waste, but also to fit within the circular economy concept. Each byproduct has its own unique functional properties, which can bring significant value.

This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using ground soybean hulls and white oat grains to finish steers reared exclusively on concentrated feed. We used 33 steers, predominantly of Charolais or Nellore breeds, and randomly assigned the animals to the treatments, blocking them according to genetic predominance. The diets were isonitrogenous, and the treatments consisted of soybean hulls, white oats, and mix these in equal parts, supplemented with calcitic limestone and a protein nucleus.

Lignin represents a potentially significant natural sunscreen alternative due to its good UV-absorbing ability, but its poor UVA absorption and dark colour are still obstacles. Numerous methods have been developed to whiten the colour of lignin, mainly including aromatic ring interruption and hydroxyl group blocking.
