A theoretical framework, a partial correlation-based functional connectivity (PC-FC) analysis to functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) data, is proposed. This is based on generating a common background signal from a high passed version of fNIRS data averaged over all channels as the regressor in computing the PC between pairs of channels. This approach has been employed to real data collected during a Stroop task. The results show a strong significance in the global efficiency (GE) metric computed by the PC-FC analysis for neutral, congruent, and incongruent stimuli (NS, CS, IcS; GEN=0.10±0.009, GEC=0.11±0.01, GEIC=0.13±0.015, p=0.0073). A positive correlation (r=0.729 and p=0.0259) is observed between the interference of reaction times (incongruent-neutral) and interference of GE values (GEIC-GEN) computed from [HbO] signals.

To distinguish DNA methylation (DNAm) from cell proportion changes in whole placental villous tissue research, we developed a robust cell type-specific DNAm reference to estimate cell composition. We collated new and existing cell type DNAm profiles quantified via Illumina EPIC or 450k microarrays. To estimate cell composition, we deconvoluted whole placental samples ( = 36) with robust partial correlation based on the top 30 hyper- and hypomethylated sites identified per cell type.

We repurposed micropillar arrays to quantify spatiotemporal inter-adhesion communication. Following the observation that integrin adhesions formed around pillar tops we relied on the precise repetitive spatial control of the pillars to reliably monitor F-actin dynamics in mouse embryonic fibroblasts as a model for spatiotemporal adhesion-related intracellular signaling. Using correlation-based analyses, we revealed localized information flows propagating between adjacent pillars that were integrated over space and time to synchronize the adhesion dynamics within the entire cell.

The auditory system comprises multiple subcortical brain structures that process and refine incoming acoustic signals along the primary auditory pathway. Due to technical limitations of imaging small structures deep inside the brain, most of our knowledge of the subcortical auditory system is based on research in animal models using invasive methodologies. Advances in ultrahigh-field functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) acquisition have enabled novel noninvasive investigations of the human auditory subcortex, including fundamental features of auditory representation such as tonotopy and periodotopy.

The study addresses the challenge of utilizing human gut microbiome data for the early detection of colorectal cancer (CRC). The research emphasizes the potential of using machine learning techniques to analyze complex microbiome datasets, providing a non-invasive approach to identifying CRC-related microbial markers. The primary hypothesis is that a robust machine learning-based analysis of 16S rRNA microbiome data can identify specific microbial features that serve as effective biomarkers for CRC detection, overcoming the limitations of classical statistical models in high-dimensional settings.

Pain experiences are often complex with catastrophic cognitions, emotions, and behaviors. Cognitive behavioral therapists share the work of unraveling these complex experiences with their patients. However, the change process underlying the unraveling of the pain experience have not yet been quantified.
