Introduction: Facial diagnosis is a major component of the diagnostic method in traditional East Asian medicine. We investigated the association of quantitative facial color features with cold pattern using a fully automated facial color parameterization system.

Methods: The facial color parameters of 64 participants were obtained from digital photographs using an automatic color correction and color parameter calculation system. Cold pattern severity was evaluated using a questionnaire.

Results: The values of the whole face, lower cheek, and chin were negatively associated with cold pattern score (CPS) (whole face: = -1.048, = 0.021; lower cheek: = -0.494, = 0.007; chin: = -0.640, = 0.031), while value of the lower cheek was positively associated with CPS ( = 0.234, = 0.019). The values of the whole face were significantly correlated with specific cold pattern symptoms including cold abdomen (partial = -0.354, < 0.01) and cold sensation in the body (partial = -0.255, < 0.05).

Conclusions: values of the whole face were negatively associated with CPS, indicating that individuals with increased levels of cold pattern had paler faces. These findings suggest that objective facial diagnosis has utility for pattern identification.

Phase Transition and Multistability in Dicke Dimer.

Phys Rev Lett

Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Smalley-Curl Institute, Rice University, Houston, Texas 77251-1892, USA.

The hybrid quantum system of cold atomic gas and optical cavity can host many exotic phenomena including phase transitions and multistabilities. In this Letter, we investigate the effect of photon hopping between two Dicke cavities and show rich quantum phases for steady states and dynamic processes. Starting from a generic dimer system where the two cavities are not necessarily identical, we analytically obtain all possible steady-state phases and confirm their existence by numerical calculations.

Background: Indications for primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have become more inclusive of morbidly obese patients, however, higher rates of complications and lower implant survival have also been reported in this population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mid-term survival, clinical, and radiographic outcomes of a cementless trabecular metal monoblock tibial component in severely obese patients.

Methods: This was a retrospective study of class II and III obese (BMI > 35) patients who received a cementless primary TKA.

In a warming world, it is crucial to understand how rising temperature affects the physiology of organisms. To investigate the effect of a warming environment on the metabolism of heterothermic bats during the costly lactation period, we characterised metabolic rates in relation to roost temperature, the bats' thermoregulatory state (normothermia or torpor), time of day and age of juveniles. In a field experiment, we heated the communal roosts of a wild colony of Bechstein's bats (Myotis bechsteinii) every other day while measuring metabolic rates using flow-through respirometry.

Myotonia congenita, both in a dominant (Thomsen disease) and recessive form (Becker disease), is caused by molecular defects in that encodes the major skeletal muscle chloride channel, ClC-1. This channel is important for the normal repolarization of muscle action potentials and consequent relaxation of the muscle, and its dysfunction leads to impaired muscle relaxation after voluntary or evoked contraction and muscle stiffness. More than 300 pathogenic variants have been found in association with congenital myotonia, inherited as recessive or dominant traits (with complete or incomplete penetrance).

This study investigates the optical, mechanical, and antimicrobial properties of polypropylene (PP) fibers enhanced with titanium dioxide (TiO) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles. Using a Mach-Zehnder interferometric system, we examined the refractive indices, birefringence, and opto-mechanical behavior of blank PP, PP/TiO, and PP/ZnO nanocomposite fibers under various conditions, including different polarization orientations and during cold drawing processes. The 2D Fourier transform algorithm is employed to analyze interferometric data, enabling precise measurements of refractive index profiles and birefringence.
