We report the case of a 79-year-old patient, admitted to the department of infectious diseases at Bretagne Sud Hospital Center for a right calcaneal osteitis, complicated by a pacemaker leads infectious endocarditis. Meticillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus was documented by blood culture. Antibiotic treatment was established using intravenous cefazolin for an initial 6 weeks period. Prothrombin time (PT) decreased as well as vitamin K dependent factors, without anticoagulation therapy, at day 7 of cefazolin treatment. After bleeding occurred on calcaneal osteitis, the VAC® therapy system was removed and intravenous vitamin K 10 mg (then 5 mg per day for 5 days per os) was administered. Vitamin K allowed PT and vitamin K dependent factors to return to normal values. Literature review does not explicitly mention the effects on vitamin K dependent factors after cefazolin administration. Four severe haemorrhagic episodes under cefazolin have been declared in France so far since February 2017. The goal of this article is to alert clinicians and clinical pathologists from the potential appearance of coagulation disorders in patients treated by cefazolin.

Objectives: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is highly prevalent in patients with breast cancer, resulting in undesirable outcomes and even reduced survival rates. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between dietary quality and CRF in patients with breast cancer, and the potential role of gut microbiota (GM) in this association.
Methods: Dietary intake and CRF were evaluated in 342 patients, with 64 fecal samples collected for 16sRNA sequencing and 106 plasma samples for tryptophan (TRP) metabolite determination.

Plants and algae harbor diverse molecules with antioxidant activity and have been demonstrated to directly inhibit cancer cell growth and mitigate the oxidative damage associated with certain antitumor therapies. While antioxidant supplementation, either alone or in combination with chemotherapy, has shown promise in improving quality of life, further research is needed to explore the effects of antioxidant combinations on specific cancer cell lines. In this study, the in vitro cytotoxic and apoptotic properties of natural compounds derived from plants and algae, as well as certain dietary supplements, were investigated against various human cancer cell lines, including bone, leukemia, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers.

Epidemiological data on vitamin D status revealed that, despite various dosage and durations of supplementation, the effectiveness often fails to achieve optimal outcomes. The need for higher doses than previously recommended was suggested, but several modifying factors should be considered, including the level of deficiency, and BMI. The objectives of this post hoc evaluation are to characterize treatment effectiveness based on the applied dose, duration and BMI; and to assess the safety aspects associated with rapid repletion of vitamin D.

Insectary plants, such as sweet alyssum, coriander, and white mustard, are well known for their traits that attract beneficial insects, allowing them to protect crops from pests. The aim of the study was to analyze the compounds that are important in the antioxidant response, such as malondialdehyde, ascorbic acid, proline, total phenolics, and total flavonoids, as well as the content of elements, including macroelements (K, Mg, Na, Ca, P, and S) and heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Mn, and Fe) in broad bean plants. These plants were grown in field conditions as the main protected plant alongside a mixture of three insectary plants at different proportions of the individual components.

Each cell in the human body is continually exposed to harmful external and internal factors. During evolution, cells have developed various defence systems, divided into enzymatic and non-enzymatic types, to which low-weight molecule antioxidants belong. In this article, the ionisation potential and electron affinity, as well as global reactivity descriptors of Vitamin C, Melatonin, Uric Acids, and N-acetyl-L-cysteine, were theoretically investigated at the MP-2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory in the condensed (aqueous) phase.
