Relative concentrations of α-casein and α-casein (α-CN and α-CN) phosphorylation isoforms vary considerably among milk of individual cows. We estimated heritabilities for α-CN phosphorylation isoforms, determined by capillary zone electrophoresis from 1,857 morning milk samples, and genetic correlations among α-CN phosphorylation isoforms in Dutch Holstein Friesian. To investigate if phosphorylation of α-CN and α-CN are due to the same genetic mechanism, we also estimated genetic correlations between α-CN and α-CN phosphorylation isoforms as well as the genetic correlations between the phosphorylation degrees (PD) of α-CN and α-CN defined as the proportion of isoforms with higher degrees of phosphorylation in total α-CN and α-CN, respectively. The intra-herd heritabilities for the relative concentrations of α-CN phosphorylation isoforms were high and ranged from 0.54 for α-CN-10P to 0.89 for α-CN-12P. Furthermore, the high intra-herd heritabilities of α-CN PD and α-CN PD imply a strong genetic control of the phosphorylation process, which is independent of casein production. The genetic correlations between α-CN phosphorylation isoforms are positive and moderate to high (0.33-0.90). Furthermore, the strong positive genetic correlation (0.94) between α-CN PD and α-CN PD suggests that the phosphorylation processes of α-CN and α-CN are related. This study shows the possibility of breeding for specific α-CN and α-CN phosphorylation isoforms, and relations between the phosphorylation degrees of α-CN and α-CN and technological properties of milk need to be further investigated to identify potential benefits for the dairy industry.

The purpose of this report is to describe the community engagement research (CEnR) strategies used to implement the (FSRAS), a tri-institutional research project conducted during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. We describe the CEnR strategies used to enroll adults aged ≥ 25 years old self-identifying as African American (AA), Caribbean (CN), or Hispanic/Latinx (H/L) into FSRAS health research studies. The second goal is to report the number of AA, CN, and H/L adults involved in FSRAS and discuss the implications of CEnR strategies used throughout this research.

Background: Semantic intrusion errors on memory tests may represent very early cognitive changes associated with elevated Alzheimer's disease pathology within the brain, including amyloid-β (Aβ). Subscales that measure proactive semantic interference (PSI) and intrusions related to PSI on the Loewenstein Acevedo Scales of Semantic Interference and Learning (LASSI-L) have been associated with high levels of brain amyloid load, structural changes on brain MRI in Hispanic and non-Hispanic groups. Nine Holstein cows with rumen cannulas and indwelling catheters in splanchnic blood vessels were used in a generalized randomized incomplete block design with repeated measures to study the effect of increased early postpartum AA supply on splanchnic and mammary AA metabolism. At calving, cows were blocked according to parity (second and third or greater) and allocated to 2 treatments: abomasal infusion of water (CTRL; n=4) or free AA with casein profile (AA-CN; n=5) in addition to a basal diet. The AA-CN infusion started with half of the maximal dose at the calving day (1 d in milk; DIM) and then steadily decreased from 791 to 226 g/d until 29 DIM.
