Background: HIV-infected (HIV+) donor organs can be transplanted into HIV+ recipients under the HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act. Quantifying HIV+ donor referrals received by organ procurement organizations (OPOs) is critical for HOPE Act implementation.

Methods: We surveyed the 58 USA OPOs regarding HIV+ referral records and newly discovered HIV+ donors. Using data from OPOs that provided exact records and CDC HIV prevalence data, we projected a national estimate of HIV+ referrals.

Results: Fifty-five (95%) OPOs reported HIV+ referrals ranging from 0 to 276 and newly discovered HIV+ cases ranging from 0 to 10 annually. Six OPOs in areas of high HIV prevalence reported more than 100 HIV+ donor referrals. Twenty-seven (47%) OPOs provided exact HIV+ referral records and 28 (51%) OPOs provided exact records of discovered HIV+ cases, totaling 1450 HIV+ referrals and 39 discovered HIV+ donors in the prior year. These OPOs represented 67% and 59% of prevalent HIV cases in the USA; thus, we estimated 2164 HIV+ referrals and 66 discovered HIV+ cases nationally per year.

Conclusions: OPOs reported a high volume of HIV+ referrals annually, of which a subset will be medically eligible for donation. Particularly in areas of high HIV prevalence, OPOs require ongoing support to implement the HOPE Act.

Drug abuse continues to pose a significant challenge in HIV control efforts. In our investigation, we discovered that cocaine not only upregulates the expression of the DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) but also augments DNA-PK activation by enhancing its phosphorylation at S2056. Moreover, DNA-PK phosphorylation triggers the higher localization of the DNA-PK into the nucleus.

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) encodes an RNA-binding protein ORF57 in lytic infection. Using an optimized CLIP-seq in this report, we identified ORF57-bound transcripts from 544 host protein-coding genes. By comparing with the RNA-seq profiles from BCBL-1 cells with latent and lytic KSHV infection and from HEK293T cells with and without ORF57 expression, we identified FOS RNA as one of the major ORF57-specific RNA targets.

Background: HIV self-testing (HIVST) can improve HIV testing uptake by offering convenience and privacy. Yet HIVST accessibility and uptake remain limited in Lake Victorias beach communities where HIVST holds promise to address many barriers highly mobile populations of men in fishing communities face. We assessed HIVST knowledge and acceptability among highly mobile fishermen, a high priority population for HIV prevention and treatment, participating in a social network-based study ("Owete"; NCT04772469) to promote HIV testing, prevention, and treatment in Kenya.

Article Synopsis
  • * Data were collected using questionnaires at two healthcare facilities, revealing a high prevalence of HBV among women aged 26 to 50 and that many individuals learned about their HBV status through free testing.
  • * The research found that 73% of patients preferred herbal remedies and showed significant differences in health status based on the type of management adopted, suggesting the need for the health minister to promote regular HBV screenings and subsidized testing and vaccination programs.

The impact of uncertainty in information systems is difficult to assess, especially when drawing conclusions from human observation records. In this study, we investigate survival variation in a population experiencing infectious disease as a proxy to investigate uncertainty problems. Using Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services claims, we discovered 1,543,041 HIV+ persons, 363,425 of whom were observed dying from all-cause mortality.
