In this paper, we demonstrate a single-polarization feature out of passive very-large-mode-area fully aperiodic large-pitch fibers. It has been previously shown theoretically that one of the two polarizations of the fundamental mode is selectively coupled to a cladding mode. This coupling does not require fiber bending, which permits us to avoid any decrease in mode effective area. The coupling is achieved owing to boron-doped silica inclusions implemented into the microstructured cladding and acting as stress-applying parts. This mechanism has been assessed experimentally in this work using fibers of two different core diameters: 60 μm and 140 μm, providing mode field areas of 3637 μm and 14,590 μm, respectively, at 1942 nm. The tested fibers have a length of 45 cm and an outer diameter exceeding 1 mm, yielding rod-type fibers. Each sample has been characterized using an unpolarized laser source emitting at 1942 nm. This laser, based on a thulium-doped large-mode-area step-index fiber, has a spectral bandwidth of about 0.5 nm. After passing through a piece of the passive fiber, a polarization extinction ratio higher than 16 dB has been achieved.

Excessive beta oscillations in the subthalamic nucleus are established as a primary electrophysiological biomarker for motor impairment in Parkinson's disease and are currently used as feedback signals in adaptive deep brain stimulation systems. However, there is still a need for optimization of stimulation parameters and the identification of optimal biomarkers that can accommodate varying patient conditions, such as ON and OFF levodopa medication. The precise boundaries of 'pathological' oscillatory ranges, associated with different aspects of motor impairment, are still not fully clarified.

3D synthetic aperture (SA) imaging of volumes can be obtained using sparse 2D ultrasound arrays. However, even with just 256 elements, the volumetric imaging rate can be relatively slow due to having to transmit on each element in succession. Hadamard Aperiodic Interval (HAPI) codes can be used to image the full SA dataset in one extended transmit to speed up the synthetic aperture imaging, but their long nature produces large deadzones if the same elements are used as both transmitters and receivers.

The electrical activity of the brain, characterized by its frequency components, reflects a complex interplay between periodic (oscillatory) and aperiodic components. These components are associated with various neurophysiological processes, such as the excitation-inhibition balance (aperiodic activity) or interregional communication (oscillatory activity). However, we do not fully understand whether these components are truly independent or if different neuromodulators affect them in different ways.

Introduction: Both ketamine (KET) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) deep brain stimulation (DBS) are emerging therapies for treatment-resistant depression, yet our understanding of their electrophysiological mechanisms and biomarkers is incomplete. This study investigates aperiodic and periodic spectral parameters, and the signal complexity measure sample entropy, within mPFC local field potentials (LFP) in a chronic corticosterone (CORT) depression model after ketamine and/or mPFC DBS.
Methods: Male rats were intraperitoneally administered CORT or vehicle for 21 days.
Recent developments in the application of aperiodic fiber Bragg gratings (AFBGs) in astrophotonics, such as AFBG for astronomical near-infrared OH suppression and gas detection based on cross-correlation spectroscopy, have illuminated the problem that the optimization for AFBG with certain fabrication constraints has not been fully investigated and solved. Previous solutions will either sacrifice part of the spectral features or consume a significant amount of computation resources and time. Inspired by recently successful applications of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in photonics inverse design, we develop an AFBG optimization approach employing ANNs in conjunction with genetic algorithms (GAs) for the first time, to the best of our knowledge.
