In this study, the cyclic behaviors of low rise concrete shear walls using recycled coarse or fine aggregates were investigated. Eight low rise Recycled Aggregates Concrete (RAC) shear wall specimens were designed and tested under a cyclic loading. The following parameters were varied: replacement percentages of recycled coarse or fine aggregates, reinforcement ratio, axial force ratio and X-shaped rebars brace. The failure characteristics, hysteretic behavior, strength and deformation capacity, strain characteristics and stiffness were studied. Test results showed that the using of the Recycled Coarse Aggregates (RCA) and its replacement ratio had almost no influence on the mechanical behavior of the shear wall; however, the using of Recycled Fine Aggregates (RFA) had a certain influence on the ductility of the shear wall. When the reinforcement ratio increased, the strength and ductility also increased. By increasing the axial force ratio, the strength increased but the ductility decreased significantly. The encased brace had a significant effect on enhancing the RAC shear walls. The experimental maximum strengths were evaluated with existing design codes, it was indicated that the strength evaluation of the low rise RAC shear walls can follow the existing design codes of the conventional concrete shear walls.

Microfluidic purification of genomic DNA.

We describe a microfluidic device to extract DNA from a cell lysate, without the need for centrifuges, magnetic beads, or gels. Instead, separation is driven by transverse migration of DNA, which occurs when a polyelectrolyte solution flowing through a microfluidic channel is subjected to an electric field. The coupling of the weak shearing with the axial electric field is highly selective for long, flexible, charged molecules, of which DNA is the sole example in a typical cell lysate.

The failure mode of thin-walled C-channel beams typically manifests as premature local buckling of the compression flange, leading to insufficient utilization of material strength in both the flange and the web. To address this issue, this study adopts the approach of increasing the number of bends to reinforce the flange and adding V-shaped stiffeners in the middle of the web to reduce the width-to-thickness ratio of the plate elements, thereby delaying local buckling and allowing for greater plastic deformation. However, the challenge lies in the irregular cross-sectional shape and complex buckling patterns.

To achieve the assembled connection between dovetail profiled steel sheets and the boundary members in dovetail profiled steel concrete composite shear walls (DPSCWs), self-tapping screws were employed. Three DPSCW specimens connected with self-tapping screws were tested under combined axial and cyclic lateral loads to evaluate their hysteretic response, focusing on the influence of the number of self-tapping screws and the axial compression ratio. The self-tapping screw-connected DPSCWs exhibited a mixed failure mode, characterized by shear failure of the profiled steel sheets and compression-bending failure of multiple wall limbs divided by ribs on the web concrete.

The current investigation explores tri-hybrid mediated blood flow through a ciliary annular model, designed to emulate an endoscopic environment. The human circulatory system, driven by the metachronal ciliary waves, is examined in this study to understand how ternary nanoparticles influence wave-like flow dynamics in the presence of interfacial nanolayers. We also analyze the effect of an induced magnetic field on Ag-Cu-/blood flow within the annulus, focusing on thermal radiation, heat sources, buoyancy forces and ciliary motion.

Interaction Between Concrete and FRP Laminate in Structural Members Composed of Reused Wind Turbine Blades Filled with Concrete.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Building Structures and Structural Mechanics, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences, Bialystok University of Technology, Wiejska 45A, 15-351 Bialystok, Poland.

The lifecycle of wind turbine blades is around 20-25 years. This makes studies on the reuse of dismantled blades an urgent need for our generation; however, their recycling is very difficult due to the specific makeup of their composite material. In this study, the authors determined a concept for the reuse of turbine blade sections filled with concrete for geotechnical structures, retaining the walls, piles, or parts of their foundations.
