A new method has been developed for the deoxygenation of vanillin to produce 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) as a promising liquid fuel over a heterogeneous non-noble metal catalyst. Cobalt nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon (Co/N-C-600) exhibit high activity and stability for the deoxygenation of vanillin into MMP under mild conditions (150 °C, 10 bar H ). Nearly quantitative MMP yield is obtained in isopropanol after 8 h at 150 °C and 10 bar H pressure. According to the distribution of products with time, the deoxygenation of vanillin into MMP mainly proceeds through the hydrogenation of vanillin into vanillyl alcohol and the subsequent hydrogenolysis of vanillyl alcohol into MMP, of which the latter is the rate-determining step, owing to a much higher activation energy. Moreover, after being recycled several times, the loss of catalytic activity is negligible, which demonstrates that the Co/N-C-600 catalyst shows good resistance to deactivation.

Selective deoxygenation of chemicals using non-noble metal-based catalysts poses a significant challenge toward upgrading biomass-derived oxygenates into advanced fuels and fine chemicals. Herein, we report a bifunctional core-shell catalyst (Ni@Al-mSiO) consisting of Ni nanoparticles closely encapsulated by the Al-doped mesoporous silica shell that achieves 100% vanillin conversion and >99% yield of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol under 1 MPa H at 130 °C in water. Due to the unique mesoporous core-shell structure, no significant decrease in catalytic activity was observed after 10 recycles.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder caused by a point mutation in hemoglobin (Hb), the protein in the red blood cell (RBC) responsible for the transport of oxygen (O) throughout the body. The mutation leads to the expression of sickle cell hemoglobin (HbS). Both Hb and HbS exist in equilibrium between oxygenated and deoxygenated forms; however, deoxygenated HbS can polymerize to form long fibers which distort the shape of RBCs into the characteristic sickled shape.

Hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation are significant and distinct approaches for the conversion of biomass and biomass-derived oxygenated chemicals into high value-added chemicals and fuels. However, it remains a great challenge to synthesize catalysts that simultaneously possess excellent hydrogenation and hydrodeoxygenation performance. Herein, we report a catalyst made of isolated single-atom Ru supported on mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (Ru/mpg-CN), fabricated by a wet impregnation method.

New developments in anti-sickling agents: can drugs directly prevent the polymerization of sickle haemoglobin in vivo?

The hallmark of sickle cell disease is the polymerization of sickle haemoglobin due to a point mutation in the β-globin gene (HBB). Under low oxygen saturation, sickle haemoglobin assumes the tense (T-state) deoxygenated conformation that can form polymers, leading to rigid erythrocytes with impaired blood vessel transit, compounded or initiated by adhesion of erythrocytes to endothelium, neutrophils and platelets. This process results in vessel occlusion and ischaemia, with consequent acute pain, chronic organ damage, morbidity and mortality.
