The present study was aimed to determine the effects of lactational exposure of PCBs (Aroclor 1254) on Leydig cellular steroidogenesis in F progeny rats. Lactating dams were orally treated by gavage with different doses of PCBs (1, 2 and 5mg/kg b.wt./day). Male progenies were sacrificed on PND60. Our results demonstrated that exposure to PCBs decreased the body weight, testis weight and anogenital distance (AGD) index in the F progeny rats. Importantly, PCBs exposure reduced the serum levels of LH, testosterone and estradiol. Interestingly, PCBs caused a decrease in the Leydig cell population along with decreased activities of steroidogenic enzymes 3β- and 17β-HSD. Additionally, we observed a significant decrease in LHR, SR-B1, StAR protein, Cyp11a1, 3β-HSD, Cyp17a1, 17β-HSD, 5α-reductase, Cyp19a1 and AR gene expression in the Leydig cells of progeny rats. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that lactational exposure of PCBs alters Leydig cellular steroidogenesis in the F progeny rats.

It is known that adverse stimuli, such as altered diets during pregnancy and lactation can result in deleterious effects on the progeny. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible gastrointestinal repercussions in the offspring of Wistar rats exposed to high-fat diets. Pregnant rats were divided into three groups: normolipidic diet (3.

Schizophrenia is a kind of neurodevelopmental mental disorder in which patients begin to experience changes early in their development, typically manifesting around or after puberty and has a fluctuating course. Environmental disturbances during adolescence may be a risk factor for schizophrenia-like deficits. As a better treatment option, preventive intervention prior to schizophrenia may be more beneficial than direct treatment.

The interaction between the main psychotropic ingredient of Cannabis, Δ⁹- tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), with the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS) is a critical and underrated issue that deserves utmost attention. The ECS, indeed, contributes to the formation and regulation of excitatory and inhibitory (E/I) neuronal networks that in the hippocampus underly spatial memory. This study explored sex-specific consequences of prenatal exposure to THC in hippocampus-dependent memory and the underlying cellular and molecular contributors of synaptic plasticity and E/I homeostasis.

We studied the influence of maternal hypothyroidism on progeny skin morphogenesis by means of histological, histochemical and lectin-histochemical methods. Hypothyroid conditions in rats were achieved by daily food supplementation with antithyroid drug Mercazolil. The experiment was conducted on 10 control and 10 hypothyroid rats, which delivered 70 and 46 offsprings, respectively.
