A downward trend in dental caries in permanent teeth of children that began in the 1970s has leveled out at historic lows. Severe periodontal disease affects a small percentage of people, and tooth loss has plummeted so that complete tooth loss, once a common occurrence, now is almost non-existent in upper socioeconomic groups. But not all people have benefited equally from these positive trends. Dental problems continue to affect the disadvantaged in society at unacceptable rates, and their disease burden is likely to increase because of trends in social determinants of oral diseases.Personal dental care alone usually is unable to provide a sufficient buffer against these risks to maintain adequate oral health. Extensive disease in young children too often requires treatment in the hospital with a high chance of relapse. A national health goal is to "achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups." Achieving this goal in oral health requires that things be done differently.This issue of the highlights several approaches being tried here in North Carolina and elsewhere to address oral health problems. Initiatives fall into 4 categories: advocacy, workforce policies, integration of oral health and primary care, and the medical management of caries.

This study investigates the effects of prenatal BPA exposure on neural stem cells (NSCs) from the hippocampi of rat offspring, a brain region critical for neurodevelopment and implicated in ASD. Pregnant rats were administered with BPA or vehicle control once daily via oral gavage from gestational day 1 until parturition.

Malnutrition substantially contributes to adverse clinical outcomes. However, no national survey has been conducted to characterize its epidemiology in hospital settings in China. We conducted the China Nutrition Fundamental Data 2020 project among a multistage stratified cluster sample of adult inpatients from 291 study sites across 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities (except for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Province, and the Xizang Autonomous Region, please see MATERIALS AND METHODS for details of the causes) of China to generate reliable data on the prevalence of malnutrition and explore the associated risk factors.

Background: Prior to enrolling in medical Spanish courses, students typically acquire their Spanish skills either through formal second language education only (L2 learners) or by being exposed to Spanish during childhood at home (heritage learners).
Objective: To categorize the language exposures of medical students who participated in a medical Spanish course and explore the associations of exposures with their medical language proficiency score on the Physician Oral Language Observation Matrix (POLOM).
Setting And Participants: Forty-one fourth-year medical students (2021-2022) self-reported demographics and prior language exposures and participated in videorecorded POLOM-rated Spanish standardized patient encounters.
