The standard-of-care therapeutics for the treatment of ocular neovascular diseases like wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are biologics targeting vascular endothelial growth factor signaling. There are currently no FDA approved small molecules for treating these blinding eye diseases. Therefore, therapeutic agents with novel mechanisms are critical to complement or combine with existing approaches. Here, we identified soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), a key enzyme for epoxy fatty acid metabolism, as a target of an antiangiogenic homoisoflavonoid, SH-11037. SH-11037 inhibits sEH in vitro and in vivo and docks to the substrate binding cleft in the sEH hydrolase domain. sEH levels and activity are up-regulated in the eyes of a choroidal neovascularization (CNV) mouse model. sEH is overexpressed in human wet AMD eyes, suggesting that sEH is relevant to neovascularization. Known sEH inhibitors delivered intraocularly suppressed CNV. Thus, by dissecting a bioactive compound's mechanism, we identified a new chemotype for sEH inhibition and characterized sEH as a target for blocking the CNV that underlies wet AMD.

Various electronically excited states and the feasibility of direct laser cooling of SH, SeH, and TeH are investigated using the highly accurate ab initio and dynamical methods. For the detailed calculations of the seven low-lying Λ-S states of SH, we utilized the internally contracted multireference configuration interaction approach, considering the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects. Our calculated spectroscopic constants are in very good agreement with the available experimental results.

Background: Postoperative spinal epidural hematoma (SEH) is a rare but serious complication following lumbar surgery, with cauda equina syndrome (CES) being one of its most devastating outcomes. While CES typically presents with a combination of bladder and/or bowel dysfunction, diminished sensation in the saddle area, and motor or sensory changes in the lower limbs, atypical cases with isolated urinary symptoms are less recognized and pose significant diagnostic challenges.
Case Presentation: We report the case of a 46-year-old male who developed CES following lumbar microdiscectomy, presenting solely with urinary retention, without the classic signs of lower limb weakness or perineal sensory loss.
