Growing evidence suggests that serotonin is an important mediator in the cross-talk between immune and bone cells, playing a role in the pathogenesis of various types of inflammatory arthritis (IA). However, the relationship between circulating serotonin and different outcomes in three most prevalent IA - rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), remains limited and requires further investigation. This study was performed to evaluate variations in serotonin serum levels among RA, PsA, and axSpA and to explore the utility of this biochemical marker in the assessment of disease activity and health status measurements provided by the Multi-Dimensional Health Assessment Questionnaire (MDHAQ).

Article Synopsis
  • Methotrexate (MTX) is commonly used for treating psoriasis but can cause kidney damage, which antioxidants like vitamin C (vitC) might mitigate.
  • A study using a mouse model of psoriasis explored how vitC impacts kidney toxicity from high doses of MTX, finding that while vitC can reduce kidney damage, it may worsen skin lesions and kidney injury when combined with IMQ (a psoriasis-inducing agent).
  • The findings indicate that vitC could be beneficial for renal protection in psoriasis but should not be used alongside MTX in patients with existing kidney issues.

Methotrexate: Use in the Post Dobbs v. Jackson Era.

J Clin Rheumatol

October 2024

From the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, University of Alabama Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama.

Article Synopsis
  • Methotrexate is a commonly prescribed medication for various rheumatic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, originally developed for cancer treatment in the 1960s and approved for RA in 1988.
  • It has been used for medical abortions and can cause serious birth defects, affecting 6%-10% of pregnant women taking it, making its use complex in light of current abortion policies in the U.S. after the Dobbs ruling.
  • The Dobbs decision has influenced healthcare providers' and patients' views on methotrexate, suggesting an expanded role for rheumatologists in addressing patients' reproductive health concerns.
