The elongation of free-standing one-dimensional (1D) functional nanostructures into lengths above the millimeter range has brought new practical applications as they combine the remarkable properties of nanostructured materials with macroscopic lengths. However, it remains a big challenge to prepare 1D silicon nanostructures, one of the most important 1D nanostructures, with lengths above the millimeter range. Here we report the unprecedented preparation of ultralong single-crystalline Si nanowires with length up to 2 cm, which can function as the smallest active material to facilitate the miniaturization of macroscopic devices. These ultralong Si nanowires with augmented flexibility are of emerging interest for flexible electronics. We also demonstrate the first single-nanowire-based wearable joint motion sensor with superior performance to reported systems, which just represents one example of novel devices that can be built from these nanowires. The preparation of ultralong Si nanowires will stimulate the fabrication and miniaturization of electric, optical, medical, and mechanical devices to impact the semiconductor industry and our daily life in the near future.

Though much progress has been achieved in the discovery of new molecular ferroelectrics in recent years, practical applications and related physics are still rarely explored due to the difficulty in high-quality film production and patterning issues. Single-crystalline films and patterns are in high demand for high device performance. Through a template-assisted space-confined strategy, herein, ordered single-crystalline nanowire patterns and optoelectronic devices of a semiconducting molecular ferroelectric (SMF), hexane-1,6-diammonium pentaiodobismuth (HDA-BiI), were successfully demonstrated.

Anion exchange in halide perovskites offers prospective approaches to band gap engineering for miniaturized and integrated optoelectronic devices. However, the band engineering at the nanoscale is uncontrollable due to the rapid and random exchange nature in the liquid or gas phase. Here, we report a source-limiting mechanism in solid-state anion exchange between low-dimensional perovskites, which readily gives access to ultralong compositional gradient nanowires (NWs) with lengths of up to 100 μm.

The <100> oriented single-crystalline Zirconium Carbide (ZrC) nanowires were controllably synthesized on a graphite substrate by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) with optimized growth parameters involving Zirconium tetrachloride (ZrCl), flow of methane (CH), and growth temperature. The length of nanowires is above 10 µm while the diameter is smaller than 100 nm. A single ZrC nanowire was picked up and fixed on a tungsten tip for field emission measurement.

Metal-free carbon materials (MFCMs) have extensive applications in electrocatalysis because of their comparable catalytic activity to that of Pt/C in some cases. Understanding the structure-property relationship is crucial for the reasonable design of more efficient catalysts. To reveal the structure-property relationship of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), we prepared nanowire model catalysts on single-crystalline Au(111) electrodes through state-of-the-art on-surface synthesis.
