[10]Cycloparaphenylene ([10]CPP) and its tetraalkoxy derivatives were synthesized on the gram scale in 7 steps starting from 1,4-benzoquinone or 2,5-dialkoxy-1,4-benzoquinone. The key steps involve the highly cis-selective bis-addition of 4-bromo-4'-lithiobiphenyl to the quinones to produce a five-ring unit containing cyclohexa-1,4-diene-3,6-diol moiety, the platinum-mediated dimerization of the five-ring unit, and the HSnCl-mediated reductive aromatization of cyclohexadienediol. The tetraalkoxy substituents increased the solubility of [10]CPP in common organic solvents. The carrier-transport properties of thin films of [10]CPP and its derivatives were measured for the first time and indicated that [10]CPP derivatives could rival phenyl-C-butyric acid methyl ester, which is used widely as an n-type active layer in bulk heterojunction photovoltaics.

The high potential of non-covalent arene-fluoroarene intermolecular interactions in the design of liquid crystals lies in their ability to strongly promote self-assembly, improve the order and stability of the supramolecular mesophases, and enable tuneability of the optical and electronic properties, which can potentially be exploited for advanced applications in display technologies, photonic devices, sensors, and organic electronics. We recently successfully reported the straightforward synthesis of several mesogens containing four lateral aliphatic chains and derived from the classical triphenylene core self-assembling in columnar mesophases based on this paradigm. These mesogenic compounds were simply obtained in good yields by the nucleophilic substitution (SFAr) of various types of commercially available fluoroarenes with the electrophilic organolithium derivatives 2,2'-dilithio-4,4',5,5'-tetraalkoxy-1,1'-biphenyl (2Li- ).

We have prepared a monolayer of a novel liquid crystalline polymer derived from 2,6-dihydroxy-3,7,10,11-tetraalkoxy-triphenylene (PHAT) at an air-water interface and transferred it onto freshly cleaved mica as well as gold coated mica substrates by the Langmuir-Blodgett (L-B) technique. Metal-free and metal(II) all-endo-tetraalkoxy-phthalocyanines of C4h symmetry are synthesised regiospecifically from 3-(2-butyloctyloxy)phthalonitrile with lithium octanolate and subsequent metal ion exchange. The voluminous, yet not overly large, and racemically disordered alkoxy substituent not only renders the cyclotetramerisation regiospecific, but also leads to liquid crystalline self-assembly with attainable clearing temperatures and persisting columnar organisation at room temperature. A rare hexagonal mesophase with twelve columns per hexagonal unit cell is found in the metal-free homologue, whereas the metal complexes show rectangular mesophases.
