Background: Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is an infrequent yet severe mucocutaneous reaction that involves less than 10% of the Body Surface Area (BSA). It is predominantly induced by certain medications, including anticonvulsants (e.g.

Introduction And Importance: Malignant hypertension is the most severe form of hypertension that may cause life-threatening manifestations. Carbamazepine is an antiepileptic drug primarily used for seizure disorders and trigeminal neuralgia. One of the rarely triggered adverse side effects of carbamazepine is drug-induced malignant hypertension.

Carbamazepine is a commonly used drug in psychiatric settings used for indications such as partial seizures, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, mixed seizure patterns, pain associated with trigeminal neuralgia, acute manic, and mixed manic states. However, this drug comes with its own series of adverse effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, hyponatremia, headaches, and dry mouth. One serious side effect which is rarely documented includes "carbamazepine-induced pancytopenia.

The link between human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles and carbamazepine-induced cutaneous, respiratory, and gastrointestinal adverse drug reactions (ADR) has created a window of opportunity for preventing certain forms of cutaneous adverse drug reactions (cADRs); however, there is not enough data to make pharmacogenomic recommendations that can be implemented globally. The aim of this study is to assess and document carbamazepine-induced adverse reactions among prescribed Saudi/non-Saudi patients. A retrospective chart review was performed for patients who received carbamazepine (CBZ) in the period between 2016 and 2020, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

To provide a comparison of genotyping for HLA risk alleles versus patch testing to determine which of these two tests is a better diagnostic tool for cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions caused by anti-seizure medication. A literature study was performed in PubMed to assess the sensitivity and specificity of HLA genotyping and patch tests for identifying anti-seizure medication induced cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions. This study shows that HLA-B*15:02 genotyping shows high sensitivity for carbamazepine-induced SJS/TEN, especially in Han Chinese and Southeast Asian patients (66.
