Understanding the links between chemical composition, nano-structure and the dynamic properties of silicate melts and glasses is fundamental to both Earth and Materials Sciences. Central to this is whether the distribution of mobile metallic ions is random or not. In silicate systems, such as window glass, it is well-established that the short-range structure is not random but metal ions cluster, forming percolation channels through a partly broken network of corner-sharing SiO tetrahedra. In alumino-silicate glasses and melts, extensively used in industry and representing most of the Earth magmas, metal ions compensate the electrical charge deficit of AlO tetrahedra, but until now clustering has not been confirmed. Here we report how major changes in melt viscosity, together with glass Raman and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance measurements and Molecular Dynamics simulations, demonstrate that metal ions nano-segregate into percolation channels, making this a universal phenomenon of oxide glasses and melts. Furthermore, we can explain how, in both single and mixed alkali compositions, metal ion clustering and percolation radically affect melt mobility, central to understanding industrial and geological processes.

In this letter, we investigated the impact of percolation transport mechanisms on ferroelectric field effect transistor (FeFET) multi-value storage with Kinetic Monte-Carlo (KMC) simulation considering aspect ratio and temperature dependencies. It is found that the portion of the ferroelectric polarization, which dominated the threshold voltage shift of the FeFET, increases when aspect ratio of device decreases. Moreover, randomness of percolation path formation and variations of equivalent conductance can be suppressed, indicating mitigation of device-to-device variations and enhancement of separation of individual states.

Article Synopsis
  • PVDF is a promising material for solid polymer electrolytes because of its good thermal stability and wide electrochemical range, but it faces issues with poor ionic conductivity due to the formation of a harmful alkaline layer on garnet fillers.
  • LiOH on the surface of these fillers contributes to the breakdown of PVDF chains, leading to unwanted chemical bonds; this can be mitigated by treating the fillers with acetic acid to create alkali-free garnets.
  • The modified PVDF electrolyte shows significantly improved ionic conductivity and a wider electrochemical window, resulting in better performance for solid-state lithium batteries, evidenced by higher discharge capacity and cycle stability.

Majorana quasiparticles and topological phases in 3D active nematics.

School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH9 3FD, United Kingdom.

Quasiparticles are low-energy excitations with important roles in condensed matter physics. An intriguing example is provided by Majorana quasiparticles, which are equivalent to their antiparticles. Despite being implicated in neutrino oscillations and topological superconductivity, their experimental realizations remain very rare.

Percolative phase transition in few-layered MoSe field-effect transistors using Co and Cr contacts.

The metal-to-insulator phase transition (MIT) in two-dimensional (2D) materials under the influence of a gating electric field has revealed interesting electronic behavior and the need for a deeper fundamental understanding of electron transport processes, while attracting much interest in the development of next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices. Although the mechanism of the MIT in 2D semiconductors is a topic under debate in condensed matter physics, our work demonstrates the tunable percolative phase transition in few-layered MoSe field-effect transistors (FETs) using different metallic contact materials. Here, we attempted to understand the MIT through temperature-dependent electronic transport measurements by tuning the carrier density in a MoSe channel under the influence of an applied gate voltage.

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency-temperature dependence of the AC conductivity and relaxation times in humid electrical pressboard used in the insulation of power transformers, impregnated with the innovative NYTRO BIO 300X bio-oil produced from plant raw materials. Tests were carried out for a composite of cellulose-bio-oil-water nanodroplets with a moisture content of 0.6% by weight to 5% by weight in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 5·10 Hz.
