Partial heating of black water by auto-thermal aerobic digestion was combined with the addition of 1% w/w urea and monitoring of pathogens and indicator organisms over a 21-day period. After initial mixing, the 160 m black water (60 m heated and 100 m non-heated) was left undisturbed. The urea was confirmed to be fully degraded into ammonia (5.1 g N L) first after 14 days, while the pH stabilised at around 9.2 after one week. The initial temperature of 17 °C fell by 6 °C during the study. E. coli and Salmonella spp., which are sensitive to ammonia, were inactivated during the first few days of the study, despite the urea only being partly hydrolysed. At day 14, f-RNA bacteriophages could also no longer be detected. The more persistent somatic coliphages, Enterococcus spp. and Ascaris eggs, showed significant but slow inactivation. The treatment proved to be efficient with regards to salmonella, which is a target pathogen in the Swedish context, but for parasite egg inactivation a higher temperature was required. The treatment would benefit from more frequent stirring to speed up the hydrolysis of urea and thus improve treatment efficiency. The alternative treatment scheme could increase capacity by 2.4 times, albeit with a 40% higher cost per volume due to the increased use of urea.

The use of black alder (BA) bark biomass in rigid polyurethane (PUR) foam compositions was the main task of investigation. Extractive compounds isolated from the bark through hot water extraction were used as precursors for bio-polyol synthesis via acid-free liquefaction with the polyether polyol Lupranol 3300 and through oxypropylation with propylene carbonate. The OH functionality and composition of the polyols were analyzed via wet chemistry and FTIR spectroscopy.

This study aimed to evaluate the oxidative stability and surface properties of cold-pressed vegetable oils using the Langmuir monolayer technique. Six oils-milk thistle, evening primrose, flaxseed, camelina sativa, black cumin, and pumpkin seed-were analyzed to investigate their molecular organization and behavior at the air/water interface, particularly after undergoing oxidation. The results showed that oils rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as flaxseed and evening primrose oils, formed monolayers with larger molecular areas and lower stability, which led to faster oxidative degradation, especially under thermal conditions.

During a field study in the Baili Azalea Forest Area in Guizhou Province, China (27°12'N, 105°48'E) between May and July 2023, symptoms of leaf spot were observed on Franch. The incidence of leaf spot on leaves was about 12% in a field of 1 hm2, significantly reducing their ornamental and economic value. The affected leaves bore irregular, grey-white lesions with distinct dark brown borders, accompanied by black conidiomata.
