Light directed migration of a cluster of cells in the centimeter scale.

Small GTPases

Published: July 2020

Protein-based systems for light directed migration of cells have been demonstrated up to distances of several hundred microns, but larger distances in the centimeter scale would allow new possible applications. Light activated migration in mammalian cells can be achieved by cells expressing channelrhodopsin-2 and an engineered Ca sensitive Rac1 protein called RACer. In this study, light was used to induce wound healing, localize cells into a region of interest, and move cells over centimeter scale distances. Given the spatially complex organization of different types of cells in real tissue, light directed migration over the centimeter scale could potentially organize cell type arrangement to help develop more realistic tissues for transplantation.

Single-crystal Au(111), renowned for its chemically inert surface, long-range "herringbone" reconstruction, and high electrical conductivity, has long served as an exemplary template in diverse fields, , crystal epitaxy, electronics, and electrocatalysis. However, commercial Au(111) products are high-priced and limited to centimeter sizes, largely restricting their broad applications. Herein, a low-cost, high-reproducible method is developed to produce 4 in.

Extensive ichnologic and sedimentologic datasets were gathered from six localities (Fortune Head, Fortune North, Grand Bank Head, Lewin's Cove, Little Dantzic Cove, and Point May) of the Ediacaran-Cambrian Chapel Island Formation at Burin Peninsula, southeastern Newfoundland, eastern Canada. 1708.2 m of sedimentary strata were logged at a centimeter scale (1:40) using a Jacob staff, in addition to 11.

A major challenge in neuroscience is visualizing the structure of the human brain at different scales. Traditional histology reveals micro- and meso-scale brain features but suffers from staining variability, tissue damage, and distortion, which impedes accurate 3D reconstructions. The emerging label-free serial sectioning optical coherence tomography (S-OCT) technique offers uniform 3D imaging capability across samples but has poor histological interpretability despite its sensitivity to cortical features.

Quinones stimulate reactive oxygen species production from zero-valent iron over centimeter distances.

Water Res

Department of Environmental Science, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310058, PR China. Electronic address:

Zero-valent iron (ZVI) has demonstrated high potential for in-situ remediation of contaminated groundwater and soils. Upon exposure to oxygen, ZVI generates reactive oxygen species (ROS). In parallel with the electron transfer mediated-reductive path, ROS plays a critical role in the oxidative degradation of organic pollutants during ZVI remediation of groundwater and soil.
