Published: November 2017

An asymmetric formal total synthesis of the akuammiline alkaloid (+)-strictamine is reported. The key features of the synthesis include a Friedel-Crafts cyclization to form the D-ring and the critical C7 all-carbon quaternary carbon centre, as well as an aza-1,6-conjugate addition to assemble the 2-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane system.

Kohn-Sham inversion for open-shell systems.

Methods based on density-functional theory usually treat open-shell atoms and molecules within the spin-unrestricted Kohn-Sham (KS) formalism, which breaks symmetries in real and spin space. Symmetry breaking is possible because the KS Hamiltonian operator does not need to exhibit the full symmetry of the physical Hamiltonian operator, but only the symmetry of the spin density, which is generally lower. Symmetry breaking leads to spin contamination and prevents a proper classification of the KS wave function with respect to the symmetries of the physical electron system.

Valvular Heart Disease Care in Pakistan: Impact of the Multidisciplinary Valve Heart Team.

JACC Adv

December 2024

Department of Interventional Cardiology& structural heart interventions, NICVD, Karachi, Pakistan.

Background: Patients with complex valvular heart disease (VHD) should be evaluated by a multidisciplinary heart team (HT). In low- and middle-income countries, referral practices are more variable, permitting any physician to refer patients directly to a cardiac surgeon without prior formal evaluation by a cardiologist with expertise in VHD.

Objectives: The goal of the study was to examine the demographics of VHD patients seen in a large heart valve center in a low- and middle-income country and to assess the impact of the multidisciplinary HT in patients referred for valve surgery.

Background: Cardiovascular (CV) disease is a leading cause of death in pregnant women globally, especially in low- and middle-income countries including Latin America (LATAM), where there is lack of data on how cardiologists are trained in cardio-obstetrics (CO) and the practice patterns in the care of pregnant patients.

Objectives: The authors aimed to identify CO competency and practice patterns among LATAM general cardiologists.

Methods: An anonymous cross-sectional Google-based electronic survey was sent via email to clinical cardiologists through local American College of Cardiology chapters and CV societies.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in low- and middle-income countries such as Haiti. Our team has demonstrated in a pilot study the implementation of a virtual cardiology curriculum to address the deficit of cardiology education in Haiti among medicine residents.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine if cardiology education can be delivered nationwide in Haiti via a virtual platform with quantifiable improvement.

Objective: Errors in the preparation and administration of intravenous medications are significant contributors to morbidity and mortality rates in medical practice. Early reporting and the implementation of preventive measures can mitigate these errors. This study aims to identify patterns and frequencies of errors in IV medication preparation and administration, along with associated factors, at Omdurman Military Hospital in Khartoum, Sudan.
